SUMMARY:The American Revolution: A story of the War in 28 Paintings
DESCRIPTION:1776 was more than a turning point; it marked the birth of a new world order. A bold line was drawn as ordinary people made extraordinary decisions\, declaring independence from the most powerful empire on earth. Driven by youthful fire\, they believed in the promise of liberty more than they feared the cost of pursuing it.\nHistoric Beverly proudly presents The American Revolution: A story of the War in 28 Paintings\, a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of artworks commissioned to illustrate Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Sr.’s landmark book.\nThese paintings are featured in Ken Burns’ upcoming documentary The American Revolution. The exhibit will be on display at the Cabot House from September 6\, 2025 to July 4\, 2026. Tickets are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Newburyport Documentary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 21st Newburyport Documentary Film Festival (NBPT DOCU FEST) \nTo Feature More Than 30 Films and Free Events \nFrom Local\, National\, and International Filmmakers \nSeptember 26-28\, 2025 \nEach September\, the seaside hamlet of Newburyport comes alive\, uniting filmmakers and audiences to celebrate this truly original American form of narrative storytelling. The 21st version of the NBPT DOCU FEST (September 26-28\, 2025) will feature over 30 films from local\, regional\, national\, and international filmmakers. Since the first recognized documentary over 100 years ago (1922’s Nanook of the North)\, audiences have enjoyed and learned about multiple perspectives on human life. Documentaries provide the world with a deeper understanding of past events and offer a glimpse into what we might face. \nIn Support of Emerging Talent – The YES Award \nNBPT DOCU FEST launched the YES Award (Young Emerging-Filmmakers Showcase) in 2021\, creating a platform celebrating new and emerging filmmakers. The YES Award is a juried competition\, with a $1\,000 first prize\, within the festival’s in-person forum. The YES program features films showcasing the work of current and recent graduates from over 50 colleges and universities nationwide\, perhaps their first opportunity to present their work to the general public.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Take a Child Outside Week! Seed Investigation
DESCRIPTION:Late Summer/early Fall is the time when many trees and plants release their seeds to grow a new generation. These seeds have some ingenious ways of getting where they need to go. Some tempt animals to eat them\, which gives them a free ride and provides fertilizer at the same time! Some parachute from trees\, float on the air or water\, or shoot out from seed pods like missiles. Join us to see what kinds of seeds we can find in Discovery Woods and on the Great Hill Conservation Land! Please note that the conservation land trails are not ADA or stroller accessible; please wear appropriate footwear and clothing. For more information on Great Hill\, please visit trails.actonma.gov. Inclement weather may result in changes to the program or cancellation.

SUMMARY:The Counter at The Umbrella Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Arts Center proudly presents the Boston-area premiere of The Counter\, a riveting new play by acclaimed playwright Meghan Kennedy. This production will run Sep 26 – Nov 9\, 2025\, transforming the intimate Black Box space into a prism for a surprising\, funny and moving reflection on the everyday connections that can change our lives. \nThe play is helmed by emerging director Alex Lonati in her Umbrella Stage debut\, and features Norton Award-nominated “ranney”* as Paul\, Margaret Clark as Katie\, and Norton and IRNE Award-winner Maureen Keiller* as Peg. \nThis award-winning play follows the unlikely connection between Paul\, a retired firefighter who goes every morning to the same small town diner\, and Katie\, who’s always there to pour the coffee. After many months of small talk across the counter\, the sharing of one secret grows into a deeply meaningful\, life-affirming friendship—shocking both Paul and Katie into embracing the hopes and joys born of basic human connection. \nThrough sharp dialogue and unexpected humor\, The Counter explores “secrets and grief and escape\, [running] away and starting again\, and most crucially standing in front of a suddenly opened door.” (New York Stage Review) \n“I’m excited that Boston audiences will have an opportunity to experience The Counter for the first time\,” says Performing Arts Director Brian Boruta. “It struck me as a thrilling surprise – a reminder that the most unlikely connections found in our everyday lives can have a monumental impact.” \nOriginally commissioned by Roundabout Theater\, it was called “an intensely provocative new American play” (New York Stage Review) by Kennedy\, whose other plays include Napoli\, Brooklyn; Too Much\, Too Much\, Too Many; and Light. Her work has been produced around the U.S.\, U.K.\, Ireland and Sweden\, developed or presented by such prominent institutions as the National Theatre of London\, The Atlantic Theater Company\, Williamstown Theatre Festival\, and Ars Nova. \n*Indicates a member of Actor’s Equity Association.
