Take part in self-guided activities for all ages or join one of our Museum Guides for a Lantern Tour. Gather your friends and family\, bundle up in your coziest layers\, BYO flashlight or lantern\, and we’ll see you at deCordova this Winter Solstice. \nWe are happy to announce that the deCordova Store and Twisted Tree Cafe will be open for holiday shopping\, warm beverages and other treats! \nAbout Aldrich Astronomical Society: \nAldrich Astronomical Society (AAS)\, which was founded in 1932\, is one of the oldest astronomy clubs in the United States. We are dedicated to promoting an understanding of the night sky. Visitors can look forward to seeing constellations\, planets and more through a variety of telescopes. \nPlease note: Stargazing is very weather-dependent\, and we can’t guarantee what will be visible in the sky on a given evening. If we need to reschedule due to weather we will let you know as early as possible via email.

SUMMARY:Shibori Dyeing Workshop at deCordova
DESCRIPTION:Shibori\, the elegant forbearer to psychedelic tie-dye\, is a Japanese resist dyeing technique that is simple enough to do in your backyard but vast with possibility. The term “shibori” comes from the Japanese “shiboru\,” meaning “twisted and pressed”. Designs are created by folding\, binding\, and compressing fabric before submerging it in dye; the manipulation of the fabric from the 2-D plane into a 3-D form prevents the dye from penetrating the internal parts of this fabric clump\, yielding distinctive organic\, often geometric patterns. While much of the art of Shibori is in the preparation and planning\, accident and chance must also be embraced. \nStudents will learn about the indigo dyeing process and will use a mix of traditional and modern shibori methods to create samples to take home and are welcome to bring their own natural fiber garments/fabric to dye as well. \nMaterials Fee of $30 is included in the tuition fee. It covers dyes\, equipment\, and fabric. Registered students will receive an email with details and logistics at least one day prior to the workshop. \nSpecial Notes & Supplies: \nPlease bring your own pair of long rubber dish gloves.\nPlastic bags for wet fabric will be available but please consider bringing your own recycled/reusable ones.\nIndigo dye likes to drip and will stain\, so wear appropriate shoes and clothing.\nIf you bring your own fabric/garments to dye\, please wash them on the hottest setting to prepare them for taking on dye.

SUMMARY:Unraveling: Author Peggy Orenstein in Conversation with Rebecca Kneale Gould
DESCRIPTION:In this lively\, funny memoir\, Peggy Orenstein sets out to make a sweater from scratch—shearing\, spinning\, dyeing wool—and in the process discovers how we find our deepest selves through craft. Orenstein spins a yarn that will appeal to everyone. \nThe COVID pandemic propelled many people to change their lives in ways large and small. Some adopted puppies. Others stress-baked. Peggy Orenstein\, a lifelong knitter\, went just a little further. To keep herself engaged and cope with a series of seismic shifts in family life\, she set out to make a garment from the ground up: learning to shear sheep\, spin and dye yarn\, then knitting herself a sweater. \nOrenstein hoped the project would help her process not just wool but her grief over the recent death of her mother and the decline of her dad\, the impending departure of her college-bound daughter\, and other thorny issues of aging as a woman in a culture that by turns ignores and disdains them. What she didn’t expect was a journey into some of the major issues of our time: climate anxiety\, racial justice\, women’s rights\, the impact of technology\, sustainability\, and\, ultimately\, the meaning of home. \nWith her wry voice\, sharp intelligence\, and exuberant honesty\, Orenstein shares her year-long journey as daughter\, wife\, mother\, writer\, and maker—and teaches us all something about creativity and connection. \nPeggy Orenstein is also the author of the New York Times best-sellers Boys & Sex\, Girls & Sex\, Cinderella Ate My Daughter and Waiting for Daisy as well as Don’t Call Me Princess\, Flux\, and the classic SchoolGirls. \nA frequent contributor to The New York Times and a contributing writer for AFAR\, Peggy has also written for such publications as The Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Post\, New York\, The Atlantic and The New Yorker\, and has contributed commentaries to NPR’s All Things Considered and The PBS News Hour. She has been featured on\, among other programs\, Good Morning America\, CBS This Morning\, The Today Show\, Morning Joe\, and NPR’s Fresh Air. Her TED Talk\, “What Young Women Believe About Their Own Sexual Pleasure\,” has been viewed over six million times. \nThe Columbia Journalism Review named Peggy one of its “40 women who changed the media business in the past 40 years.” She has been recognized for her “Outstanding Coverage of Family Diversity\,” by the Council on Contemporary Families and received Books For A Better Life Awards for Girls & Sex and Waiting for Daisy. Her work has also been honored by the Commonwealth Club of California\, the National Women’s Political Caucus of California and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She has been awarded fellowships by the U.S.-Japan Foundation and the Asian Cultural Council and residencies by Mesa Refuge and the UCross Foundation. \nPeggy will be joined in conversation by Rebecca Kneale Gould\, Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and co-chair of the Philosophy\, Religion and Environment Focus at Middlebury College\, author of At Home in Nature: Modern Homesteading and Spiritual Practice in America\, member of the Thoreau Society’s board of directors\, and proud a shepherd with a small flock of rescue sheep. \nPraise for Unraveling:\n“While Orenstein’s garment is the work of an amateur\, this book is anything but.”—The Washington Post \n“This witty\, irreverent memoir is…an absolute delight to read.” —Minneapolis StarTribune \n“By book’s end\, the reader is ready to identify deep\, intrinsic beauty in anything that is difficult to create.”\n—San Francisco Chronicle
