SUMMARY:Hosmer Open House featuring a cannon from Bunker Hill!
DESCRIPTION:The Acton Historical Society will host a visit of a British cannon.\nThis cannon was cast between 1760 and 1770. It was acquired by a local militia company in May of 1775. The ship on which it was located became mired in the mud at Chelsea Creek. This cannon and 3 others taken from the ship were later used by American forces to fight off the British at Bunker Hill. \nCome and see this “survivor” and learn about its discovery to restoration!

SUMMARY:250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress “Exploring Democracy – Our Rights and Our Responsibilities”
DESCRIPTION:In October 1774\, the political conflict between Great Britain and Massachusetts reached a crisis. Parliament enacted the “Intolerable Acts” to punish the province for the Tea Party\, and they revoked the charter of 1691 by which the popularly elected House of Representatives joined with the Council and Crown-appointed Governor to rule the Bay Colony. In the ensuing furor\, county conventions protested the changes; crowds closed courts\, Patriots took over county militias\, and encouraged towns to resist the new regime of the General Court. Royal Governor Thomas Gage called the Court to meet in Salem\, but the Assembly never convened. \nAlthough Gage canceled the session\, the representatives decided to meet behind closed and locked doors and reorganize as the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Its first session opened a week later\, on October 11th\, in Concord\, safe from the control of British authorities. The gathering was a landmark in the history of self-government. The Congress set the colony on a collision course with Britain and an eventual road to independence. Even as it proclaimed loyalty to the Crown\, the Congress mobilized the province in a struggle to reclaim the rights and liberties Massachusetts had enjoyed. Without declaring independence\, the popularly elected body seized the reins of power\, charted a new future for Massachusetts\, and set a model of self-government. \nOctober 11\, 2024\, marks the 250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. To commemorate this occasion and honor our forebearers\, the Wright Tavern Legacy Trust is sponsoring a gathering in Concord’s First Parish Meetinghouse and the Wright Tavern next door\, where the delegates to the Congress met. This will be a day-long\, engaging program. With noted historians to guide us\, we will return to this crucial moment in the history of the American Revolution and ask what we can learn from the past. With state legislators joining us\, we will examine the state of democratic governance in Massachusetts and the United States today. And\, with students and teachers from Massachusetts schools\, we will collaboratively explore the future of democracy. Come join us for this remarkable day.

SUMMARY:Sounds of Labor in Lowell: Agriculture and Early Industry
DESCRIPTION:What does the history of work in Lowell sound like\, and how can you tell that story through music? Come be part of the musical composition process in the first of a series of workshops on the soundscape of Lowell through its many eras! Join contemporary composers working on new pieces specifically for Lowell National Historical Park as they explore the labor of the Agriculture and Early Industry eras. Attend a ranger-led talk\, attempt hands-on activities\, and have a chance to discuss the compositions in progress. No musical knowledge necessary! \nParticipants can plan to meet at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center (246 Market Street). A guided tour will walk to the Boott Cotton Mills Museum (115 John Street) and attendees can expect about half a mile of walking. \nLowell National Historical Park visitors may park at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District parking garage at 350 Dutton St.\, Lowell. Parking in this garage (only) is available to National Park visitors at no cost provided they obtain a valid parking voucher at either the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center at 246 Market Street\, or at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum at 115 John Street. \nThis program is made possible through a grant from the National Park Foundation through generous support from the Mellon Foundation\, and with our programming partner\, Mosaic Lowell. DESCRIPTION:Come along on a ghostly outdoor adventure! The spirits of the Old Burying Ground are eager to bring Lexington’s past back to life and share with you the tales of what brought them to the grave on this special candlelight tour. As you walk along the winding paths of Lexington’s oldest graveyard\, hear from John Parker\, leader of the Lexington militia on the fateful first day of the American Revolution\, Sarah Childs\, who lost six children during an epidemic in 1778\, and more! For ages 5 and up; some walking required. Tours cover half a mile and last approximately 45 minutes. \nTours will depart every five minutes from Buckman Tavern between 6:30 and 7:15 PM. \nMore information coming soon!
