DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: April 14 – June 14\, 2025\nOpening Reception  April 14\, 6PM \nThe Umbrella Arts Center in historic Concord Center will commemorate the semiquincentennial of the American Revolution and “the shot heard round the world” with an ambitious outdoor/indoor public and gallery art exhibition\, Weaving an Address\, curated by artist Marla McLeod. \nFor the first time\, Weaving an Address combines The Umbrella’s popular Art Ramble public art installation\, on view April 15 through October 7 at Brister’s Hill in nearby Walden Woods\, with an indoor exhibition (on view April 14 through June 14) in The Umbrella’s Allie Kussin Gallery. The exhibition features site-specific work by eight prominent Black artists combining sculpture\, fiber art\, installation and live performance inspired by little-known experiences of historical Black inhabitants of Concord and its Walden Woods. \nFeatured artists in the exhibition are Ifé Franklin\, Stephen Hamilton\, Whitney Harris\, Ekua Holmes\, Perla Mabel\, Marla McLeod\, Kimberly Love Radcliffe\, and Anthony Peyton Young. \nOutdoors\, large-scale work will be installed on Brister’s Hill\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved.Indoors at The Umbrella\, inter-related fiber artworks will weave narratives from fragmented pasts to offer a vision of how history shapes the present and influences the future. \nSupporting community activities include an opening reception on April 14\, monthly curator talks\, a processional with artist Ifé Franklin\, and participation in the town-wide Revolutionary Concordians Trading Card program. \nThis exhibition is presented as part of the Concord250 commemoration\, in partnership with The Walden Woods Project and The Robbins House\, in association with Gather 2025\, a month-long exploration and celebration of fiber and textile art in Greater Boston\, and with permission of Concord Natural Resources Division. \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Weaving for more information about special engagements\, wayfinding\, artist bios\, and background to the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:New attention from historians and journalists is raising pointed questions about the founding period: was the American revolution waged to preserve slavery\, and was the Constitution a pact with slavery or a landmark in the antislavery movement? Leaders of the founding who called for American liberty are scrutinized for enslaving Black people themselves: George Washington consistently refused to recognize the freedom of those who escaped his Mount Vernon plantation. And we have long needed a history of the founding that fully includes Black Americans in the Revolutionary protests\, the war\, and the debates over slavery and freedom that followed. Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nStarting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, this tour explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. SUMMARY:Colonial Dance Tunes and Love Songs
DESCRIPTION:Dressed in the clothes of 18th-century itinerant musicians\, Deirdre Sweeney and Al Petty will perform an extensive repertoire of historical dance music\, as well as marches and laments\, including 18th-century tunes such as “Mr. Isaac’s Maggot” and “Jack’s Health.” Their instruments include the flute\, penny whistle\, recorder\, and fife. The music was gathered from manuscripts printed between the 17th and 19th centuries and arranged in counterpoint.\nThe two musicians\, who sometimes appear with a third musician as the Colonial Minstrels\, have long been active in related musical cultures\, including American fife and drum and traditional Irish music. They are popular performers at the Paul Revere House Museum in Boston. \nDoors open at 2 PM for a social period and refreshments; 2:15 PM Announcements and Annual Meeting\, followed by the Guest Speaker. \nThere is an elevator to the 3rd floor\, where the program will be held. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Happy Accident Broadsides Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join letterpress artist Mitch Cohen and Museum of Printing Director Operations Mitch Ahern as\nthey put on a workshop combining experimental letterpress monoprint techniques with printing customized\nbroadsides. This is a unique printing workshop using everyday items to create unique backgrounds —\nincluding\, but not limited to\, bathmats\, pool covers and other items. You have to do it to believe it. The session\nwill conclude with a letterpress printed keepsake on the background you created.\nWe can then take those backgrounds and use them to print broadsides on the Columbian iron hand press.\nVisitors can pull their own print\, and can even customize a print with their own name.\nThe Happy Accident Broadsides Workshop is free to the public with Museum Admission\, thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts\nOffice of Travel and Tourism.\nMitch Cohen is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of letterpress printing and a long-time practitioner\nof the “black arts.” He is the co founder of the Printmaking and Book Arts Center in Rochester\, New York\, a\ndivision of Flower City Arts Center and has taught letterpress printing since 2005. He has a BS in Printing\nEducation from Rochester Institute of Technology.\nMitchel Ahern is the Director of Operations at the Museum of Printing\, where he teaches workshops\, manages\nprinting equipment donations\, and serves on the board. He also has his own shop Mitchelka Show Card Press\nin Lynn\, Massachusetts.
