DESCRIPTION:Andy Volpe will print some of his Paul Revere replica copperplates\, including his latest 250th commemorative print project: 3 Promissory Notes (paper money) that Revere secretly engraved & printed for the Massachusetts patriots in May 1775. He plans on having some other prints\, plates\, tools and other visuals to discuss the work of Revere leading up to the American Revolution. \nThis event is funded in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) through the Massachusetts 250 Grant Program. This program supports the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution through programs that highlight historic themes of revolution and independence\, celebrate significant ‘firsts’ in Massachusetts and commemorate the state’s past 250 years.

SUMMARY:Happy Accident Broadsides Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join letterpress artist Mitch Cohen and Museum of Printing Director Operations Mitch Ahern as\nthey put on a workshop combining experimental letterpress monoprint techniques with printing customized\nbroadsides. This is a unique printing workshop using everyday items to create unique backgrounds —\nincluding\, but not limited to\, bathmats\, pool covers and other items. You have to do it to believe it. The session\nwill conclude with a letterpress printed keepsake on the background you created.\nWe can then take those backgrounds and use them to print broadsides on the Columbian iron hand press.\nVisitors can pull their own print\, and can even customize a print with their own name.\nThe Happy Accident Broadsides Workshop is free to the public with Museum Admission\, thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts\nOffice of Travel and Tourism.\nMitch Cohen is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of letterpress printing and a long-time practitioner\nof the “black arts.” He is the co founder of the Printmaking and Book Arts Center in Rochester\, New York\, a\ndivision of Flower City Arts Center and has taught letterpress printing since 2005. He has a BS in Printing\nEducation from Rochester Institute of Technology.\nMitchel Ahern is the Director of Operations at the Museum of Printing\, where he teaches workshops\, manages\nprinting equipment donations\, and serves on the board. He also has his own shop Mitchelka Show Card Press\nin Lynn\, Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Colonial Dance Tunes and Love Songs
DESCRIPTION:Dressed in the clothes of 18th-century itinerant musicians\, Deirdre Sweeney and Al Petty will perform an extensive repertoire of historical dance music\, as well as marches and laments\, including 18th-century tunes such as “Mr. Isaac’s Maggot” and “Jack’s Health.” Their instruments include the flute\, penny whistle\, recorder\, and fife. The music was gathered from manuscripts printed between the 17th and 19th centuries and arranged in counterpoint.\nThe two musicians\, who sometimes appear with a third musician as the Colonial Minstrels\, have long been active in related musical cultures\, including American fife and drum and traditional Irish music. They are popular performers at the Paul Revere House Museum in Boston. \nDoors open at 2 PM for a social period and refreshments; 2:15 PM Announcements and Annual Meeting\, followed by the Guest Speaker. \nThere is an elevator to the 3rd floor\, where the program will be held. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:New attention from historians and journalists is raising pointed questions about the founding period: was the American revolution waged to preserve slavery\, and was the Constitution a pact with slavery or a landmark in the antislavery movement? Leaders of the founding who called for American liberty are scrutinized for enslaving Black people themselves: George Washington consistently refused to recognize the freedom of those who escaped his Mount Vernon plantation. And we have long needed a history of the founding that fully includes Black Americans in the Revolutionary protests\, the war\, and the debates over slavery and freedom that followed. DESCRIPTION:A tribute to those patriots who fell on Lexington Green on the morning of April 19\, 1775. \nSince 1971\, the Lexington Minute Men have recreated the birth of American liberty on Lexington Common\, also known as the Lexington Battle Green\, at 6 AM on Patriots’ Day. First proclaimed as a public holiday in Massachusetts in 1894\, Patriots’ Day commemorates the start of the American Revolution at the Battle of Lexington. The Battle of Lexington is commemorated every year on the third Monday in April. We pay tribute to those patriots who fell on Lexington Green on the morning of April 19\, 1775\, and to the courage and fortitude of those who continued the fight throughout the day. The celebration usually spans an entire weekend culminating with the annual parade through Lexington Center. \nAfter dawn on Patriots’ Day\, spectators ring the Common watching the huddled group of Minute Men- “The Alarm” at the Old Belfry. Soon they hear the steady pounding of drums and marching feet as column upon column of red-coated Regulars come into view. Angry words are spoken. Then a shot is fired. Volley after volley of musket fire follows. Seven men fall. The Regulars shout a triumphant “huzza” and continue on to Concord. Despite losing close friends and family members\, the Minute Men soon follow them to Concord\, where they have their revenge. This is the historic reenactment of the beginning of the War for American Independence \nMore events to spend your day in Lexington: \nThe Sunrise Youth Parade is organized annually as a part of Patriots’ Day celebrations. SUMMARY:Pole Capping Day - Patriots Day Reenactment of a Colonial Protest in Bedford
DESCRIPTION:The Opening battles of the American Revolution took place in Lexington in Concord on April 19th\, 1775. This is the 250th anniversary of this monumental event. Before any shots were fired\, so many events led up to the actual conflict to start the revolution. Cities and towns across New England were gearing up for what was to come. \nOne act of defiance\, (which dates back to Roman times)\, was to place a red cap on a pole. This simple act of Pole Capping was a provocative move. \nOne tradition in Bedford that started back in 1965 was reenacting this show of defiance with their annual Pole Capping event. Reenactors in colonial costumes for both the Colonists as well the Red Coats march from the Bedford Common to Willson Park march to defy the British and climb a pole to lodge their grievances. \nMinuteman reenactors from throughout the region come to Bedford to participate in this event that is kicked off with a festive parade from the Town Common. \nPole Capping Day is considered the start of the Patriots Day celebration in the region. Along with the event there is the traditional Pancake breakfast and other activities. While you’re here\, you can also visit the Bedford Historical Society’s exhibit on its opening day: \nThe Bedford Historical Society will also open their exhibit\, “Bedford Answers the Call.”\nBedford Town responded to the urgent alarm spread through Eastern Massachusetts on the night of April 18\, 1775. They were one of the five towns involved in the exchange of fire at the North Bridge. To commemorate the 250 th anniversary of that day\, the Bedford Historical Society is mounting an exhibition entitled “Bedford Answers the Call.” It will open on Pole Capping Day\, April 12\, 2025\, and remain until January\, 2026\, highlighting Bedford’s participation in the first moments of the American Revolution. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the grand opening of “Bedford Answers the Call” at our Open House on April 12th from 8 – 10:15 a.m. and immediately following the Pole Capping Day parade and ceremony. \nIn celebration of the 250th anniversary of the first day of the American Revolutionary War on April 19\, 1775\, we’ve created a collection of artifacts and stories specific to Bedford. Two rooms of the Historical Society Museum feature our town’s response to the urgent midnight call to arms: “The British are coming!” \nAlso\, visit our satellite displays at the Bedford Free Public Library\, 7 Mudge Way\, Bedford\, MA\, to learn about the history of the present-day Bedford Minuteman Company.
