SUMMARY:Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race 2024
DESCRIPTION:Kinetic Sculptures are all-terrain\, human-powered\, art sculptures\, engineered to race over road\, water\, mud and sand. Kinetic sculptures are amazing works of art; many are animated with moving parts like blinking eyes\, opening mouths\, heads that move side to side and up and down. These machines of art are usually made from what some people consider “junk” or better put\, recycled materials. Each kinetic team has a theme and consist of pilots\, pit crew and support crew. Spectators are encouraged to either watch from the sidelines or follow the race on their bikes (obeying all traffic laws that apply). \n

DESCRIPTION:Parades\, pageants and pandemonium have defined the many commemorations of the 1775 Battle of Lexington and the first shots of the War for Independence. Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nStarting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, this tour explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. The tour is 1 hour long and covers about a 1/2 mile on flat ground. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Lowell Walks: Portuguese in Lowell
DESCRIPTION:Join researchers and archivists from the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Portuguese American Digital Archive\, Nikki Tantum\, Gray Fitzsimons\, and Nicole Catarino on a walk around the Back Central neighborhood. In the late 1800s\, increasing demands for cotton cloth production provided jobs and opportunity for the first Portuguese immigrants arriving in Lowell. In the decades that followed more Portuguese immigrants moved to the city and wove their lives and cultures into the neighborhood of Back Central\, creating a new community that still exists today. \nThis walk will highlight these stories just as the photography exhibit “The Portuguese in Lowell: The Familiar and the New” does\, but through a different lens. This exhibit highlighting photographs captured by Pedro Letria is on display at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum through February 2025. \nJoin us for this upcoming Lowell Walks event\, a guided walking tour. Tours are about 90 minutes\, are free\, and include a moderate amount of walking. No reservations are necessary\, and tours are conducted rain or shine. \nFree parking is available where the tour meets: Portuguese American Civic League of Lowell\, 512 Central Street.

DESCRIPTION:Kashmir\, The Live Led Zeppelin Show was created by vocalist Jean Violet back in 2000. It has grown from the streets of New York City to now being one of the top Led Zeppelin Tribute bands touring nationally and internationally. Kashmir’s primary focus is capturing the live performance and raw energy of a Led Zeppelin show. \nTime and time again audience members who meet and greet with Kashmir after a show tell them how they felt as if they went back in time to a Led Zeppelin concert that they attended or how younger members of the audience will tell the band how it was the closest experience that they will ever get to a Live Led Zeppelin performance. \nYes the singer looks and sounds alot like Robert Plant and the band shares the authenticity\, appearance and sound of the great Led Zeppelin but more importantly the band wants to share the energy and the experience that Led Zeppelin created while on tour. The band calls it “The Zone” and they want everyone to share that same electromagnetic experience after leaving a Kashmir show like so many Zep fans did in the past while watching the great Led Zeppelin on stage! \nAll Lawn Seating/General Admission – Bring Your Own Chair/Blanket. Food\, Soft Drinks\, Beer and Wine are available for purchase. Dogs are permitted on a non-retractable leash and cannot be a nuisance. No outside alcohol permitted. Smoking is not permitted in the Amphitheater Handicap parking is available.   All attendees follow yellow directional signs to the parking area – upper fields parking lot and field. Portable toilets are available throughout the event. The ending time is approximate. The Town of Acton has the right to make changes if necessary for this event. Children under age 10 are free with a paid adult.

This year Jorge Arce Comparsa Boricua will lead the Parade through the streets of downtown Lowell\, MA to the opening ceremony at Boarding House Park. \nOver three days (July 26th – July 28th)\, the 37th edition of the Festival will present more than 20 world-class artists performing music and dance traditions that range from Korea to Louisiana\, on stages throughout Lowell. More information\, including a complete schedule of performances\, activities\, crafts\, and food stands representing cuisines from around the world\, is available at lowellfolkfestival.org. \n“This year the Festival is excited to announce its new street performance location at the corner of Central and Merrimack Streets\,” said Festival Director Lee Viliesis. “There will be an expanded schedule of performances that will bring new vitality to the furthest corners of downtown.” \nSaturday’s street performers will be San Simón Caporales of New England\, who perform traditional Bolivian dance\, and StiggityStackz Worldwide\,  Boston’s acclaimed freestyle dance troupe. \nOn Sunday\, the corner of Merrimack and Central Streets will be lit up with performances by New England’s own Yo-Yo Guy\, a past winner of the International Yo-Yo Federation’s Grand Prix and holder of 4 Guinness World Records\, who performs his high-energy comedy show; Veronica Robles\, director and founder of the Veronica Robles Cultural Center in East Boston\, and her Mariachi Band; and the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago’s flying footwork\, brilliantly colored dress\, joyful song\, dance and percussion.\nIn addition\, the four festival stages; Boarding House Park\, Market Street Stage\, St. Anne’s Churchyard\, and the Dance Pavilion\, will feature performances by world-class musicians and dancers representing cultures from around the world\, and around the corner. \nThe Lowell Folk Festival provides unique experiences to hear Festival artists from diverse cultural backgrounds explore the connections\, similarities\, and differences in their musical journeys.  These moderated talk/demonstration sessions allow festivalgoers a more intimate interaction with the musicians. \nOn Saturday\,  the familial performers of Choro das 3\, The Friel Sisters\, and Eddie Pennington & Caleb Coots will take part in a session titled All in the Family.  Soul-full Sounds of Devotion brings together Yoni Battat\, High Fidelity\, and Annie & The Caldwell Singers\, to demonstrate how they weave sacred elements into their music. \nOn Sunday\, the festival will hold Masters of Movement\, a conversation about dance traditions with internationally renowned Kathak dancer Farah Yasmeen Shaikh\, Native Pride Dancers and Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago.  Joe Hall & the Cane Cutters\, Afro Dominicano\, Swanky Kitchen Band\, and Cyril Neville will take part in a session titled Caribbean Crossroads: From the Bayou to the Barrio and Jesse Daniel\, Lutchinha and Sugaray Rayford will talk and sing songs about love\, loss\, and trouble in a panel called Songs for Good Times and Hard Times. \n“Annually\, one of the highlights of the Lowell Folk Festival has been the dazzling array of food options for hungry folk-arts lovers of all ages\,” said Viliesis. “The ‘I’m only here for the food’ t-shirts were a big hit last fall. He tours and records extensively as a solo artist\, band member and inspirational speaker. \nCarl was critically injured in a car accident in Australia in 2008 suffering traumatic brain injury. After years in recuperation & sporting a few titanium bits\, Carl fulfilled his goal and returned to The Guess Who as lead singer for two special shows in 2016.
