SUMMARY:YA Author Visit: Crystal Maldonado
DESCRIPTION:Join the Pollard Memorial Library for a special event with Mass Book Award-winner Crystal Maldonado! Crystal will share her satisfying and multidimensional YA novel\, The Fall of Whit Rivera. \nBlisteringly funny and profoundly well-observed\, The Fall of Whit Rivera is a snug and cozy romcom that tackles weightier topics like chronic illness\, sexuality\, fatphobia\, Latino/a identity\, and class. Funny\, honest\, insightful\, romantic\, and poignant\, it is classic Crystal Maldonado—and it will have her legion of fans absolutely swooning. \nFrenemies Whit and Zay have been at odds for years (ever since he broke up with her in the most embarrassing way imaginable)\, so when they’re forced to organize the fall formal together\, it’s a literal disaster. Sparks fly as Whitney—type-A\, passionate\, a perfectionist\, and a certified sweater-weather fanatic—butts heads with Zay\, a dry\, relaxed skater boy who takes everything in stride. But not all of those sparks are bad. . . . Has their feud been a big misunderstanding all along? \nThis program is sponsored by the Mass Book Awards Speakers Bureau and is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for the Book. \nCrystal Maldonado is a young adult author with a lot of feelings. She is the author of romcoms for fat\, brown girls\, including The Fall of Whit Rivera\, which People Magazine called a “pumpkin-spice-latte-flavored treat” (Winner of the 2024 Mass Book Award in the Young Adult category); Fat Chance\, Charlie Vega\, which was a New England Book Award winner\, a Cosmopolitan Best New Book\, and a Kirkus Best YA Fiction of 2021; and No Filter and Other Lies\, which was named a POPSUGAR and Seventeen Best New YA. \nBy day\, Crystal works in higher ed marketing\, and by night\, she’s a writer who loves Beyoncé\, glitter\, shopping\, and spending too much time on her phone. Her work has been published in Latina\, BuzzFeed\, and the Hartford Courant. She lives in western Massachusetts with her husband\, daughter\, and dog. Follow her everywhere @crystalwrote or visit her website at crystalwrote.com. \nCrystal will speak about her experience as a writer\, and there will be time for a book signing at the end of the presentation. La La Books will be selling copies of The Fall of Whit Rivera\, so don’t fret if you don’t have a copy! \nThis program is recommended for ages 13+ \nRegistration is required\, as space is limited.

SUMMARY:Golden Gloves - All New England Open and Novice Semi Finals
DESCRIPTION:Lowell Sun Charities is proud to present the 78th Annual Golden Gloves at Lowell Memorial Auditorium\, Thursdays from January 9 – March 6. Don’t miss a moment of one of the longest-standing New England sports traditions\, as the best amateur boxers from the area battle it out across the weeks to see who will be crowned champion. Thursday Night is Fight Night at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium! \nEvery year in the Golden Gloves they’re a new flock of boxers trying to work their way up from the bottom in hopes of advancing their way to top of the competition. The Gloves has been a tradition in New England since 1947 and sells out the Lowell Memorial Auditorium every year. “It’s only there to give kids a way out of a lifestyle and to promote the sport of boxing along with good health\, good training\, exercise and confidence.” \nWhen you win the Golden Gloves\, you don’t get paid\, you get the respect of your community; that’s very important to a young kid\, as it gives them confidence to build their life upon. \nLowell\, Massachusetts has a great tradition of boxing dating back 74 years ago. When you go to a Golden Gloves show in Lowell\, you know that it is unlike other boxing shows or any other sporting event in general. There is electricity in the air\, fans get a certain charge when they watch these fighters give every ounce of themselves for something that can’t be seen or touched. \nThis yearly event to the combatants is that\, it’s not about prizes; it’s about pride. Many of the fighters who range in age from 18-40\, are not even on a path to the pros or even the Olympics — they are simply there to say they fought in the Golden Gloves.

SUMMARY:Ways of My Ancestors – Imagery: Lighting the Path to Awareness
DESCRIPTION:“Ways of My Ancestors – Imagery: Lighting the Path to Awareness” features photographic work by Scott Strong Hawk Foster that celebrates the rich\, diverse\, and resilient cultures of the Native Peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands of North America. \nFoster is a Native American photographer and an enrolled member of Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band with proud Mohegan and Cherokee lineage. His work has been exhibited at the Danforth Museum\, Worcester Art Museum\, Boston City Hall\, and other venues. \nOn view through March 23 in The Umbrella’s Wedge Gallery\, this exhibition reflects Foster’s travels within his home state of Massachusetts and throughout the ancestral homelands of the Native American Peoples of New England. While attending powwows\, cultural events\, workshops\, and Indigenous practices that span millennia\, his passion has become highlighting cultures and history of the Indigenous peoples that are still here and living amongst us.\nBoth the opening reception March 5\, 6PM and Artist Talk\, March 9\, 1-2PM are free and open to the public. \nThe exhibition runs concurrently with The Umbrella Stage Company’s Where We Belong by Mohegan playwright Madeline Sayet in The Umbrella’s Black Box theater. Both are presented as part of The Umbrella’s programs recognizing the American semiquincentennial. \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT Card-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Foster

SUMMARY:Where We Belong
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Stage Company presents the New England premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong. \nWith great humor\, insight and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves together indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, colonialism\, cultural legacy\, the power of language and legend. It recounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare\, in the shadow of the Brexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in colonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home at Mohegan\, but finds comfort following in the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the 1700s to help her people. \nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, the show has been completely restaged by fellow director and playwright Tara Moses. Its staging in Concord during the semiquincentennial of the “shot heard round the world” raises timely questions of whose stories about history are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nThe show runs Feb. 28-Mar. 23\, including a special Student Group Matinee Wed. Mar. 12 at 4PM\, and select performances will feature engagement opportunities including optional pre-show catered dinners on Thursdays\, childcare through The Umbrella’s Kid-Care program for parents interested in attending the March 9 matinee\, and others. \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT Card-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. See https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/WWB for more information. \nStudent: $20\nSenior: $45\nAdult: $48

SUMMARY:Golden Gloves - All New England Open and Novice Finals

SUMMARY:Alarmed in Lexington
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time to experience the anxious hours before the start of the American Revolution. It’s past midnight on April 19th\, 1775\, and Paul Revere has just left the home of Lexington’s minister\, Jonas Clarke\, with news of an impending British attack. This leaves the home’s occupants to take in the news and prepare for what is to come. In a series of three short plays by playwright Debbie Wiess\, see how John Hancock and Samuel Adams\, leaders of the Revolution\, Dorothy Quincy and Lydia Hancock\, John’s family\, and Jonas and Lucy Clarke\, town leaders\, process the impending crisis as they prepare for war in the very rooms in which these conversations took place two hundred and fifty years ago. \nThis program is funded in part by Kirkland and Shaw Plumbing and Heating\, and by a grant from the Lexington Council for the Arts\, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n$20 members\, $25 nonmembers

SUMMARY:“The Light of Seven Days”: An author event with Mass Book Award-Honoree River Adams
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chelmsford Public Library for a special event with Mass Book Award-honoree River Adams! River will share their acclaimed and richly textured novel\, The Light of Seven Days. \nLiving with her Babby after her parents’ death\, 10-year-old Dinah Ash is invited to train at Leningrad’s legendary Vaganova Ballet School. In the world of elite dance\, she works hard\, falls in love\, and weathers the Soviet Union’s ubiquitous antisemitism\, but despite an impressive talent\, she quickly learns that dancers of her “profile” don’t make prima ballerinas. Love of Leningrad\, ballet\, friends\, family\, and books sustain Dinah until history intervenes. \nThe Soviet war in Afghanistan\, the rise of perestroika\, and a re-emergence of Nazism leave her vulnerable and exposed. Realizing escape is her only option\, she applies for refugee status in America. Dinah’s adjustment to life in the US is a test as much of her identity as of her perseverance. Is who she is something Dinah can forge on her own? Or is identity imposed by upbringing\, public opinion\, and the myths of our cultures? As Dinah struggles with the questions of religion\, race\, and worth\, her choices and the people she encounters will determine whether the dream of a better life can survive the weight of the past. \nThis program is sponsored by the Mass Book Awards Speakers Bureau and is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for the Book. \nRiver Adams (they/them) grew up in late Soviet Russia\, pursuing a career as a concert pianist\, and came to America at the age of 19 as a Jewish refugee. They graduated from Delaware County Community College in Pennsylvania\, earned their BA at Rosemont College and their MTS at Harvard Divinity School\, then returned to Philadelphia to teach religious studies and work as a medical interpreter for Russian-speaking patients. Today\, having earned an MFA from Emerson College\, they live in Massachusetts; care for their noisy family of eight humans\, two dogs\, and a cat; and write. They are the author of many published short stories and essays and a biography of Leonard Swidler\, There Must Be YOU (Resource Publications\, 2014). Their debut novel\, The Light of Seven Days (Delphinium Books\, 2023) was named finalist by the National Jewish Book Awards and an honor title by the Massachusetts Book Awards. \nFor more information\, visit their website: riveradamsauthor.weebly.com
