SUMMARY:Liberty and Loyalty: Embroidered Coats of Arms in an Age of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In 1775\, Mary Jones of Weston Massachusetts watched her life collapse around her as her family\, all supporters of the British Crown\, fled their homes and had their immense fortune confiscated during the Revolution. Among what she had left to remember them was a mostly finished needlework sampler displaying the Jones family coat of arms. Years later\, she returned to Massachusetts and settled in Concord\, where this sampler now resides in the collection of the Concord Museum. \nErica Lome\, PhD\, Associate Curator at Historic New England\, uses this needlework as a starting point to survey the history of embroidered coats of arms worked in Boston in the late eighteenth century. More than an accomplishment of a genteel education\, heraldic needlework was created by young women to document their family genealogy\, a practice that endured through war\, exile\, and independence. DESCRIPTION:Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a designated National Day of Service\, to encourage all Americans to volunteer within their communities and honor the life and legacy of the Civil Rights leader. Join the Discovery Museum as we engage in small acts of service to benefit our neighbors. \nMake a Welcome Card for and help collect “Friendship Basket” supplies to support the Refugee and Immigrant Assistance Center\, an organization dedicated to providing comprehensive services to refugees\, asylees\, and immigrants in Massachusetts. Friendship Baskets are given to elderly or families with young children as a way to help them receive supplies that might otherwise cause a financial burden while also welcoming them into their new community. Most needed items are: \nCleaning supplies such as dish soap\, all-purpose cleaner\, sponges\, laundry detergent\, paper towels\, trash bags\nHygiene supplies such as toilet paper\, Kleenex\, hand soap\, shampoo\, conditioner\, body wash\, toothbrushes\, toothpaste\, deodorant\, lotion\, razors\, shaving cream\, and feminine hygiene products\nAll Friendship Basket supply donations will benefit The Refugee and Immigrant Assistance Center.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting new program series that honors the contributions of Black women in the fields of science\, technology\, engineering\, and math. In this program\, explore the work of Alice Ball\, a groundbreaking chemist who developed the “Ball Method” – one of the first treatments for Hansen’s Disease\, or leprosy. Be inspired by her work as you try your hand at some basic laboratory techniques\, such as pipetting\, and conduct simple experiments to explore water solubility. \nThis program series was created in combination with Ellice Patterson\, Biologist and Founder/Artistic and Executive Director of Abilities Dance Boston\, and a Discovery Museum Science & Engineering Communication Fellow.

Grotesque\, cartoonish figures twist\, explode\, and bend backwards into psychedelic eruptions of color\, pattern\, and detail. DESCRIPTION:The newest twist on Concord’s classic tour from the Concord Visitor Center is a 90-minute chocolate filled experience that will introduce guests to the downtown Concord area. Tours every Friday and Saturday in February and March at 1 p.m. \nThe tour will touch on the town’s revolutionary and literary history while visiting sites such as The Milldam\, Monument Square\, The Old Hill Burial Ground and more. \nParticipants will enjoy a taste of locally roasted nuts combined with handcrafted chocolate at Gräem Nuts and Chocolate and get a taste of their Signature Handmade Bark.  Other stops include Priscilla’s Candy Shop\, a fourth generation family owned candy shop\, hand making fine chocolates\, truffles\, fudges and caramels since 1936\, and the Concord Cheese Shop for a taste of locally made Chocolate Chevre Cheese.
