SUMMARY:Reading Into History: Book Chat on Ida B. The Queen
DESCRIPTION:Ida B. Wells committed herself to the needs of those who did not have power. In the eyes of the FBI\, this made her a “dangerous negro agitator.” In the annals of history\, it makes her an icon. Ida B. the Queen tells the awe-inspiring story of an pioneering woman who was often overlooked and underestimated—a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for white passengers; a woman brought to light the horrors of lynching in America; a woman who cofounded the NAACP. Written by Wells’s great-granddaughter Michelle Duster\, this “warm remembrance of a civil rights icon” (Kirkus Reviews) is a unique visual celebration of Wells’s life\, and of the Black experience. \nJoin us for an interactive discussion on this fascinating historical figure\, led by a Lexington Historical Society Book Chat member. Reading the book is encouraged but by no means required! Refreshments will be served; doors open at 6:30. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Lowell Artist Showcase: Debbie Roy
DESCRIPTION:Introducing the Lowell Artist Showcase! Once a month the library hosts a local artist to come in\, talk about & showcase their art\, and give small\, simple demonstration or project that attendees can participate in. Materials will be provided by the library. \nThis month we will be hosting Debbie Roy and her craft-foam creations. She plans to share some of her completed projects followed by a hands-on workshop demonstrating how to make simple roses using craft-foam\, scissors\, and a glue gun. \nAbout the Artist:\nHaving spent most of her life immersed in creative endeavors (of very little career\, monetary\, or historical significance)\, Debbie Roy has decided to continue this trend. She fills her days with obsessive and varied crafting\, singing\, sewing\, and building costumes for her scooter as well as writing stories\, poems\, plays\, and frivolous Facebook updates. She has seldom met a craft she didn’t like. After discovering the versatility of craft-foam sheets\, she’s used them to make everything from costumes and props to seasonal decorations. Getting older is mandatory\, growing up is optional. \nPlease register for this event on the library website. Capacity: 15 people.

SUMMARY:Annual Lowell Women's Week Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a morning of inspiring words\, community\, and recognizing the achievements of extraordinary women in greater Lowell. Tickets required. \nKeynote Speaker: Yun-Ju Choi\, Chief Executive Officer of Coalition for a Better Acre \nYun-Ju Choi is the Chief Executive Officer of Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA)\, a membership-based community development corporation dedicated to fostering resident empowerment and facilitating sustainable community revitalization. CBA manages 529 affordable rental units\, providing housing for 1\,600 residents\, while also offering foreclosure\, financial\, and workforce development training\, and driving veteran housing initiatives. In her capacity as Chief Executive Officer\, Choi has successfully more than doubled CBA’s budget\, surpassing $2.5 million. She adeptly oversaw the construction of 131 units of affordable housing across Lowell\, Dracut\, and Haverhill. Expanding beyond CBA’s foundational focus on affordable housing\, Choi enriched the organization’s impact by expanding youth programs\, civic engagement\, health access\, workforce and economic development\, and community engagement activities. Choi emphasizes that\, for CBA\, the mission extends beyond real estate\, “It’s about uplifting people and giving them opportunities to buy homes and market rate housing.” Her vision for CBA is rooted in the belief that the organization should not only address housing needs but also empower individuals to achieve their goals and enhance their overall well-being. In addition to her role at CBA\, Choi actively contributes to several boards and commissions\, including the Whistler House Museum\, Lowell Finance & Development Corporation\, Greater Lowell Community Foundation\, and Mill City Community Investments. Choi’s exceptional leadership and contributions were recognized with the 2023 Community Advocacy Award\, acknowledging CBA’s role in creating affordable housing in Lowell\, Dracut\, and Haverhill. Notably\, in the summer of 2023\, CBA cut the ribbon on 27 affordable housing units for individuals in recovery from substance use disorder in partnership with Lowell House Inc. This development marked a significant milestone as the first Passive House certified building in the city of Lowell within CBA’s portfolio. Yun-Ju Choi came to CBA in 2014 and brings a wealth of experience to her role\, having previously worked in various capacities within Boston’s non-profit landscape\, including positions at Madison Park and Lena Park Community Development Corporations\, the Boston Foundation\, and the Boys & Girls Club of Boston. With an unwavering dedication spanning over two decades\, she has consistently advocated the cause of homeownership for low and moderate-income individuals. Now\, more than 20\,000 families have completed the home buyer training program. SUMMARY:Countdown to April 19th\, 1775: The Gathering Storm
DESCRIPTION:Noted historian and author J. L. Bell will be speaking on Tuesday\, April 2 at 7:00 PM in\nRoom 204\, Acton Town Hall\, 472 Main Street\, Acton\, MA. Please register for the talk at:\nhttp://tinyurl.com/APR-02-Bell\, or use the QR code above. Remote Participation: You\ncan participate in the Q&A using ZOOM http://tinyurl.com/Acton250-ZOOM or watch\nlive at Acton TV http://tinyurl.com/Acton-TV. \nContext: As the year 1774 began\, Massachusetts politicians worried about how the\nroyal government in London would respond to the Boston Tea Party. The force of that\nreaction became clear in the return of troops to Boston\, the Coercive Acts\, and the\nMassachusetts Government Act. In late summer the province’s people rebelled by\nshutting down government functions in rural counties\, seizing weapons in ports\, and\nelecting their own legislature. The engine of that resistance was a little-understood\ninstitution: the colonial militia. By fall\, it was clear that the new royal governor had no\nleverage outside Boston. This talk traces the end of British power in most of\nMassachusetts even before the war began. \nJ. L. Bell has explored the end of British royal government in Massachusetts by\nfollowing the contest for artillery pieces in his acclaimed book\, The Road to Concord:\nHow Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War. He also maintains the Boston\n1775 blog\, which offers daily helpings of history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about\nRevolutionary New England. \nWe will post a recording shortly after on the Acton 250 website. This is the fourth\nlecture in a series commissioned by the Acton 250 Committee. Please visit the Acton 250 website\nhttps://www.actonma.gov/250 for all event programming. \nGenerously supported by the Acton Lions Club.

SUMMARY:THE SIXTIES SHOW
DESCRIPTION:This popular theater show is a cross generational crowd pleaser and has been selling out every theater and performing arts center that the show plays at. The band is widely celebrated and known for spot on\, note for note re-creations of the hits\, B-sides and deep album cuts from the greatest songs of the 1960’s. \nIn addition to the concert experience\, the show is full multi -media Broadway type production that is powerfully dramatized by a combination of time travel special effects\, narration\, 60’s archival audio and newsreel footage and a light show. This seen to be believed bigger-than-life\, Broadway theater styled show is nothing less than awe -inspiring. \nThe Sixties Show is a high energy trip back in time that reminds the audience how uniquely inspirational\, entertaining\, and historically significant the music and events of the 1960’s was and continues to be.
