SUMMARY:The American Revolution: A story of the War in 28 Paintings
DESCRIPTION:1776 was more than a turning point; it marked the birth of a new world order. A bold line was drawn as ordinary people made extraordinary decisions\, declaring independence from the most powerful empire on earth. Driven by youthful fire\, they believed in the promise of liberty more than they feared the cost of pursuing it.\nHistoric Beverly proudly presents The American Revolution: A story of the War in 28 Paintings\, a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of artworks commissioned to illustrate Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Sr.’s landmark book.\nThese paintings are featured in Ken Burns’ upcoming documentary The American Revolution. The exhibit will be on display at the Cabot House from September 6\, 2025 to July 4\, 2026. Tickets are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Recounting the Revolution: History and Meaning of Leutze’s The News of Lexington
DESCRIPTION:Best known for his iconic painting Washington Crossing the Delaware\, German-American artist Emanuel Leutze also painted other scenes of the American Revolution. One of these\, The News of Lexington (1852)\, portrays local townsfolk receiving word of the battle that launched the Revolution. Recently conserved with support from the Wyeth Foundation of American Art\, the painting is now on display at the Lexington Depot. Join art scholar Kate Criscitiello as she explores the history of this fascinating painting and reexamines its meaning within the political and social context of 19th-century America. \nThis talk will be followed by a reception to ask questions\, examine the painting more closely\, and enjoy light refreshments with the speaker. \nAbout Our Speaker: \nArt historian Kate Criscitiello most recently served as the Assistant Curator at the Lexington History Museums\, where she led the curation of the special exhibition Swept Up in Revolution. A passionate advocate for New England history\, Kate serves on the Board of Trustees at the House of the Seven Gables. She has also worked as a Graduate Scholar with the Center for Painted Wall Preservation\, contributing to the creation of a virtual museum of New England’s painted walls. Kate holds a master’s degree in art history and museum studies from Tufts University. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers
