SUMMARY:LIVING IN AMERICA AND TENTH ANNUAL POETRY CONVERGENCE | October 2 - 27\, 2024 | Loading Dock Gallery
DESCRIPTION:October is always a special month in the Loading Dock Gallery show schedule. This year LDG presents Living in America\, a New England Regional juried show. Juried by Patrick McCay\, a professor at the Institute of Art and Design at New England College\, the selected artists use this time of change and pre-election discussion to reflect on their personal stories and what our great experiment means to them and answer the question\, “What does Living in America mean to you?” Using their varied mediums and unique perspectives\, their responses are on display for all to experience. \nWhether born and raised in America or a recent immigrant\, artists tell their stories with impressions of their personal experiences\, images of hometowns\, vacations\, family\, home\, work\, traditions with a focus on what it means to live in America: freedom\, justice\, community\, equality\, opportunity\, and patriotism. They may even examine some of its darker aspects.\nFollowing our Artist Reception for Living in America\, local poets will create\, and present poems inspired by works in the Gallery Show. \nThe annual Loading Dock Gallery show\, Living in America\, will be on display October 2 through October 27\, 2024 at Loading Dock Gallery\, 122 Western Avenue\, Lowell\, MA\, Noon-5:30 pm\, Wednesday-Saturday\, until 4pm Sunday. Reception 3-5pm\, Saturday\, October 5\, 2024. More at www.theloadingdockgallery.com. \nLoading Dock Gallery is part of Loading Dock Arts\, Inc.\, a 501c3.

SUMMARY:250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress “Exploring Democracy – Our Rights and Our Responsibilities”
DESCRIPTION:In October 1774\, the political conflict between Great Britain and Massachusetts reached a crisis. Parliament enacted the “Intolerable Acts” to punish the province for the Tea Party\, and they revoked the charter of 1691 by which the popularly elected House of Representatives joined with the Council and Crown-appointed Governor to rule the Bay Colony. In the ensuing furor\, county conventions protested the changes; crowds closed courts\, Patriots took over county militias\, and encouraged towns to resist the new regime of the General Court. Royal Governor Thomas Gage called the Court to meet in Salem\, but the Assembly never convened. \nAlthough Gage canceled the session\, the representatives decided to meet behind closed and locked doors and reorganize as the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Its first session opened a week later\, on October 11th\, in Concord\, safe from the control of British authorities. The gathering was a landmark in the history of self-government. The Congress set the colony on a collision course with Britain and an eventual road to independence. Even as it proclaimed loyalty to the Crown\, the Congress mobilized the province in a struggle to reclaim the rights and liberties Massachusetts had enjoyed. Without declaring independence\, the popularly elected body seized the reins of power\, charted a new future for Massachusetts\, and set a model of self-government. \nOctober 11\, 2024\, marks the 250th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. To commemorate this occasion and honor our forebearers\, the Wright Tavern Legacy Trust is sponsoring a gathering in Concord’s First Parish Meetinghouse and the Wright Tavern next door\, where the delegates to the Congress met. This will be a day-long\, engaging program. With noted historians to guide us\, we will return to this crucial moment in the history of the American Revolution and ask what we can learn from the past. With state legislators joining us\, we will examine the state of democratic governance in Massachusetts and the United States today. And\, with students and teachers from Massachusetts schools\, we will collaboratively explore the future of democracy. Come join us for this remarkable day.

SUMMARY:Into the Thaw
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Minuteman National Historical Park and Walden Pond were named as among the top 11 endangered historic sites in America\, in part due to climate change. The alterations to our natural environment during the climate crisis have far-reaching consequences to the preservation of history as well as the natural landscape. \nMore than 40 years ago\, the park ranger Jon Waterman took his first journey to Alaska’s Noatak River. Astonished by the abundant wildlife\, the strange landscape\, and its otherworldly light\, he spent collective years of his life exploring Arctic North America on extended sea kayaking\, packrafting\, skiing\, dogsledding\, and backpacking journeys—often alone for weeks at a time. After three decades away from the Noatak\, he returned with his son\, and amid a now-flooded river bereft of the once-plentiful caribou\, he was shocked by the changes. The following year\, 2022\, he took one final journey to film and document the climate crisis across the North in his new book\, Into the Thaw (Patagonia Press) —the subject of his October 17 image-intensive presentation. A frequent National Geographic grantee and NEA Literary Fellow\, Waterman (Lexington High class of 1974) is the author of 17 books. \nThis presentation generously sponsored by Lester E. Savage Real Estate \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers
