SUMMARY:Lowell Walks: Mill Girls & Boarding House Keepers
DESCRIPTION:With the construction of a new mill city\, a large labor force was needed to fill minimum wage positions being rapidly created. The boarding house system allowed mill agents sent out into the New England countryside to recruit a new workforce of young women with promises of paid work\, available food\, shelter\, and the care and supervision of a boarding house keeper. \nJoin a ranger for the upcoming Lowell Walks\, a guided walking tour. SUMMARY:Lafayette Returns!
DESCRIPTION:On September 2\, 1824\, most of Lexington turned out to the Battle Green to see an international superstar who’d been drawing ecstatic crowds in state after state that summer. The Marquis de Lafayette had returned to America for a triumphal anniversary visit\, 50 years after his crucial assistance in America’s improbable victory not only won the Revolution\, but sparked a new era of human liberty. And he took care to include Lexington\, a town of just 900\, on his tour. \nNow\, exactly 200 years after that celebration\, Lexington will turn out again to celebrate the Marquis\, the bicentennial of his remarkable tour\, and Lexington’s proud place in the events that established America. A full-scale re-enactment of Lafayette’s Lexington visit is scheduled for Labor Day\, Sept. 2\, 2024\, at 1 p.m. in Lexington Center. \nFor the Marquis’ appearance in 1824\, the Town had prepared a huge banner reading\, “Welcome Friend of America to the Birthplace of American Liberty.” It bedecked an arch of flowers and evergreen boughs stretched over the Green. “It was a scene of wild and joyous enthusiasm\, the homage of the people to their country’s noble friend and benefactor\,” recounted the founder of the Lexington Historical Society years later. Every schoolchild in town marched by the Marquis\, strewing flowers at his feet as they passed. Fourteen grizzled veterans of the first battle in the War for Independence\, fought on that very spot\, hailed the hero and expressed the veneration most Americans felt for Lafayette by the time of his tour. \nAll those same elements will be recreated and reenacted on the Green this Labor Day\, when a member of the American Friends of Lafayette will become the Marquis for the occasion\, proceeding under a reproduced arch and banner (the original banner will be on display nearby.) The schoolchildren in white dresses\, boys in their Sunday best\, will turn out; cannon will boom; devotees of history portraying the 14 veterans of the Battle will hail their hero once more. \nWe’d like to thank our community partners for the help in putting this event together:\nAmerican Friends of Lafayette\nJohn Crane’s Artillery Company\nLexArt\nLexMedia\nLexSeeHer\nLexington Minute Men\nTown of Lexington\nDepartment of Public Works\nLexington 250 Commission\nSNAP – Special Needs Arts Program\nWilliam Diamond Fife and Drum Corp\n1824 Militia Company

SUMMARY:Kashmir - The Spirit of Led Zeppelin Live featuring Jean Violet
DESCRIPTION:Kashmir\, The Live Led Zeppelin Show was created by vocalist Jean Violet back in 2000. It has grown from the streets of New York City to now being one of the top Led Zeppelin Tribute bands touring nationally and internationally. Kashmir’s primary focus is capturing the live performance and raw energy of a Led Zeppelin show. \nTime and time again audience members who meet and greet with Kashmir after a show tell them how they felt as if they went back in time to a Led Zeppelin concert that they attended or how younger members of the audience will tell the band how it was the closest experience that they will ever get to a Live Led Zeppelin performance. \nYes the singer looks and sounds alot like Robert Plant and the band shares the authenticity\, appearance and sound of the great Led Zeppelin but more importantly the band wants to share the energy and the experience that Led Zeppelin created while on tour. The band calls it “The Zone” and they want everyone to share that same electromagnetic experience after leaving a Kashmir show like so many Zep fans did in the past while watching the great Led Zeppelin on stage! \nAll Lawn Seating/General Admission – Bring Your Own Chair/Blanket. Food\, Soft Drinks\, Beer and Wine are available for purchase. Dogs are permitted on a non-retractable leash and cannot be a nuisance. No outside alcohol permitted. Smoking is not permitted in the Amphitheater Handicap parking is available.   All attendees follow yellow directional signs to the parking area – upper fields parking lot and field. Portable toilets are available throughout the event. The ending time is approximate. The Town of Acton has the right to make changes if necessary for this event. Children under age 10 are free with a paid adult.

SUMMARY:Backyard and Beyond: Seed Investigation at Discovery Museum
DESCRIPTION:Late Summer/early Fall is the time when many trees and plants release their seeds to grow a new generation. These seeds have some ingenious ways of getting where they need to go. Some tempt animals to eat them\, which gives them a free ride and provides fertilizer at the same time! Some parachute from trees\, float on the air or water\, or shoot out from seed pods like missiles. Join us to see what kinds of seeds we can find in Discovery Woods and on the Great Hill Conservation Land! Please note that the conservation land trails are not ADA or stroller accessible; please wear appropriate footwear and clothing. For more information on Great Hill\, please visit trails.actonma.gov. Inclement weather may result in changes to the program or cancellation.

SUMMARY:Lowell Walks: Portuguese in Lowell
DESCRIPTION:Join researchers and archivists from the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Portuguese American Digital Archive\, Nikki Tantum\, Gray Fitzsimons\, and Nicole Catarino on a walk around the Back Central neighborhood. In the late 1800s\, increasing demands for cotton cloth production provided jobs and opportunity for the first Portuguese immigrants arriving in Lowell. In the decades that followed more Portuguese immigrants moved to the city and wove their lives and cultures into the neighborhood of Back Central\, creating a new community that still exists today. \nThis walk will highlight these stories just as the photography exhibit “The Portuguese in Lowell: The Familiar and the New” does\, but through a different lens. This exhibit highlighting photographs captured by Pedro Letria is on display at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum through February 2025. \nJoin us for this upcoming Lowell Walks event\, a guided walking tour. Tours are about 90 minutes\, are free\, and include a moderate amount of walking. No reservations are necessary\, and tours are conducted rain or shine. \nFree parking is available where the tour meets: Portuguese American Civic League of Lowell\, 512 Central Street.

SUMMARY:Wonderland Ball
DESCRIPTION:The Wonderland Ball will be a whimsical evening of historical dancing. Elegant attire inspired by Alice in Wonderland\, historical dress\, and historical “fancy dress” are encouraged. Light refreshments will be served. No partner is required and beginners are welcome! The event will be held in the stately and historic Andover Old Town Hall\, which is perfectly situated for a pre-ball dinner at one of Andover’s many excellent restaurants. Public parking is available throughout the town center. The Andover Commuter Rail Station is within walking distance of Old Town Hall. \nDancing will include a mix of contra dances\, quadrilles\, and round dances (often called “couple dances”). Contra dances and quadrilles are done by many couples together arranged in long lines\, squares\, or circles around the ballroom and do not require any special footwork – just walking! These dances will be taught throughout the ball\, and will be the majority of the program. We will also teach a selection of the evening’s dances at the afternoon workshop for those who want to give them a try. All dancing will be done to recorded music\, so you will be able to practice to the songs you’ll dance to in the evening. \nThis event is presented by The Footwork and Frolick Society\, a non-profit educational organization focused on 18th and 19th century dancing and amusements of all kinds. Tickets are available at multiple price points: $35 student/$45 standard/$65 supporter and can be purchased at https://www.footworkandfrolick.org/upcoming-events/wonderland-ball

SUMMARY:Sunday Stroll Walking Tour: Lexington Celebrates!
DESCRIPTION:Parades\, pageants and pandemonium have defined the many commemorations of the 1775 Battle of Lexington and the first shots of the War for Independence. Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nStarting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, this tour explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. The tour is 1 hour long and covers about a 1/2 mile on flat ground. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Lowell Summer Music Series: Belly
DESCRIPTION:The dream-rock band Belly blazed a bright trail in the ’90s\, releasing two albums full of taut\, yet wondrous music that was memorable for its rumbling bass lines and insistent drumming as it was for its glittering riffs and airy vocals. Their 2018 release Dove\, which was recorded with friend of the band Paul Q. Kolderie\, places Belly back on that trail\, bridging the gaps between reverbed-out bliss and spaghetti-western drone and muscular\, hook-forward pop. \nBelly came together in 1991\, when vocalist-guitarist Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses\, The Breeders) began playing with brothers (and fellow Rhode Islanders) Tom (guitar) and Chris (drums) Gorman\, as well as bassist Fred Abong. He left before the band’s 1993 debut Star came out\, and Gail Greenwood\, then playing around Providence\, joined. Star was a hit with critics and listeners alike\, spawning the alt-radio and MTV staple “Feed the Tree.” The band toured extensively behind the gold-certified album\, touring with the likes of Radiohead\, the Cranberries\, and Pavement and playing a show at the Hippodrome in Paris where they opened for U2 and the Velvet Underground. \nAdvance GA $55.00 ($48.00 ticket + $7.00 service fee) \nAdvance Premium $111.00 ($98.00 ticket + $13.00 service fee)\n\nDay Of GA $67.00 ($58.00 ticket + $9.00 service fee)\nDay Of Premium $122.00 ($108.00 ticket + $14.00 service fee)\n\nPremium Seats are low-to-the-ground chairs which we provide and are located in the first several rows for each show. SUMMARY:1774 and All That: Reflections on a Long Year of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 2024\, the Concord Museum will commence its highly anticipated fall forum series with a special discussion featuring Mary Beth Norton\, renowned historian and award winning author of the landmark text 1774: The Long Year of Revolution. This exciting event marks the beginning of a series of programs hosted by the Concord Museum leading up to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. \nNorton will explore the pivotal period leading up to the American Revolution and the dramatic events that occurred between December 1773 through April 1775\, including the Boston Tea Party and the Battles of Lexington and Concord. \nIn 1774: The Long Year of the Revolution\, Mary Beth Norton chronicles the 16 months\, during which colonists loyal to King George III began discordant “discussions” that led to their acceptance of the inevitability of war. Norton will be joined in conversation by the Society of Colonial Wars of Massachusetts to discuss this transformative era and its impact on American history\, highlighting its significance in leadup to the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race 2024
DESCRIPTION:Kinetic Sculptures are all-terrain\, human-powered\, art sculptures\, engineered to race over road\, water\, mud and sand. Kinetic sculptures are amazing works of art; many are animated with moving parts like blinking eyes\, opening mouths\, heads that move side to side and up and down. These machines of art are usually made from what some people consider “junk” or better put\, recycled materials. Each kinetic team has a theme and consist of pilots\, pit crew and support crew. Spectators are encouraged to either watch from the sidelines or follow the race on their bikes (obeying all traffic laws that apply). \n
