SUMMARY:Westford REV 250: Bartering\, Currency\, and the American Economy in Colonial Times
DESCRIPTION:The issue of money\, particularly its scarcity\, loomed large in colonial America. Under the constraints of British rule\, gold and silver served as the official legal tender; however\, these precious metals were rarely found circulating within the colonies. Lacking a stable and trusted commodity to function as currency\, colonial governments in the eighteenth century turned to paper money\, creating a new avenue for economic exchange. \nIn this enlightening program\, you will explore the complex world of currency in colonial America\, exploring its value and significance. The presentation will showcase a historical array of images\, providing visual context as it unfolds the story of money in this era. It will begin by examining the currency of the United Kingdom\, delineating its application in the colonies\, and clarifying the notion of “legal money\,” including the various “Tenors” that defined its worth. Furthermore\, it will delineate the primary mediums that facilitated business transactions and the exchange of goods in the vibrant marketplace of pre-revolutionary America. \nAbout the Speaker: Matthew Mees\, a dedicated Living Historian\, specializes in the rich tapestry of colonial life during the late 18th century. His expertise spans the transition from British dominance to the nascent years of American independence\, offering invaluable insights into this transformative period. \nProgram Donation: $10 per person \nWestford REV 250 Program series is sponsored by Enterprise Bank

SUMMARY:Golden Gloves - All New England Open and Novice Preliminaries
DESCRIPTION:Lowell Sun Charities is proud to present the 78th Annual Golden Gloves at Lowell Memorial Auditorium\, Thursdays from January 9 – March 6. Don’t miss a moment of one of the longest-standing New England sports traditions\, as the best amateur boxers from the area battle it out across the weeks to see who will be crowned champion. Thursday Night is Fight Night at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium! \nEvery year in the Golden Gloves they’re a new flock of boxers trying to work their way up from the bottom in hopes of advancing their way to top of the competition. The Gloves has been a tradition in New England since 1947 and sells out the Lowell Memorial Auditorium every year. “It’s only there to give kids a way out of a lifestyle and to promote the sport of boxing along with good health\, good training\, exercise and confidence.” \nWhen you win the Golden Gloves\, you don’t get paid\, you get the respect of your community; that’s very important to a young kid\, as it gives them confidence to build their life upon. \nLowell\, Massachusetts has a great tradition of boxing dating back 74 years ago. When you go to a Golden Gloves show in Lowell\, you know that it is unlike other boxing shows or any other sporting event in general. There is electricity in the air\, fans get a certain charge when they watch these fighters give every ounce of themselves for something that can’t be seen or touched. \nThis yearly event to the combatants is that\, it’s not about prizes; it’s about pride. Many of the fighters who range in age from 18-40\, are not even on a path to the pros or even the Olympics — they are simply there to say they fought in the Golden Gloves.

SUMMARY:Author Stephen O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:Author Stephen O’Connor has added another title in his collections of books based in Lowell.\nThe Pride of the Acre is a coming-of-age story. Charlie Tumulty passes out of a difficult childhood to find love\, success in the boxing ring\, and with the help of two valuable mentors\, self-awareness and a love of reading. The road to Charlie’s Olympic boxing goal\, and to the love he yearns for\, is fraught with difficulty. A hard decision has life-altering consequences and forces him to the threshold of an even tougher decision. What is the price that vengeance owes to a love cut short? And who will pay it?\nO’Connor is the author of several other books\, including two short story collections\, Northwest of Boston and Smokestack Lightning and the novels The Spy in the City of Books and The Witch at Rivermouth.\nGather this afternoon to hear Steve read from the book. SUMMARY:Tavern Night
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to step back in time for a day? Now is your chance! Buckman Tavern’s official liquor license expired in 1813\, but we still open for business on occasion. We’re recreating the 18th century tavern experience in Lexington’s most popular 18th century entertainment venue – drop in for colonial music\, games\, snacks\, and beer served from the historic bar in the Buckman’s original taproom. Mingle with the Lexington Militia of 1775\, along with some other colonial characters\, as they bring the Revolutionary tavern to life. Raise a glass to freedom on a cold winter’s night! \nThis event is generously sponsored by Lester E. Savage Real Estate. \n$20 Members/$25 Nonmembers \nTicket price includes one beer. Cash bar available. \nThis is a 21+ event.

SUMMARY:Historic Crafts at the Boarding House
DESCRIPTION:How did people spend their free time in the cold winter months during the Industrial Revolution? What about 100 years earlier during the American Revolution? Join rangers from Lowell NHP and Minute Man NHP to try your hand at some cozy historic crafts. Make a candle\, create a tin can lantern\, and decorate your own band box. When you’re done crafting\, head upstairs to learn about how people traded for things they couldn’t make themselves. Visit our website for more information: https://go.nps.gov/qp165j

SUMMARY:Let's Trade
DESCRIPTION:One of the ways that Roger Williams\, the founder of the English settlement of Providence\, and the Indigenous peoples of Rhode Island and Massachusetts learned about each other was through trade. Join a ranger from Roger Williams National Memorial to learn about items that were important to people in this area in the 1600s. You will have a chance to touch objects such as beaver pelts\, old time toys\, shells\, and more. Learners will also make small clothespin dolls after seeing different types\nof colonial and Indigenous toys. All are invited to bring a favorite toy (the ranger will have theirs too!) to talk about what you think is valuable and special. This activity is appropriate for learners of all ages. This drop-in session will also include the chance to earn a Roger Williams National Memorial Junior Ranger Badge. Visit our website for more information: https://go.nps.gov/qp165j
