SUMMARY:Discovery Museum Speaker Series Event: How Art Can Inspire Civic Engagement in Kids
DESCRIPTION:Civic engagement is not just about voting and government—it encompasses all the ways in which individuals take action and get involved in their communities. Inspiring young people to invest in the advancement of society is about empowering children to embrace and recognize the gifts they bring to their communities. Chanel Thervil\, Discovery Museum’s Inaugural Artist-in-Residence\, will speak about her experience helping children consider what they love about their communities\, so they see a place for themselves in making their communities better. \nChanel Thervil is a Haitian American artist and educator who uses varying combinations of abstraction and portraiture to convene communal dialogue around culture\, social issues\, and existential questions. She’s been making a splash in New England via her educational collaborations\, public art\, and residencies with institutions that support the uplift of community creativity. She is excited to continue this work through her residency with the Discovery Museum.

SUMMARY:Surface Tension | May 1-26\, 2024 | Loading Dock Gallery
DESCRIPTION:This May\, Loading Dock Gallery presents Surface Tension\, a show of mixed media art by Margarita Krylova and Fernando Fula. Surface Tension features collaborative and individual works which explore universal dichotomies: harmony and chaos; unity and division; beauty and decay. \nKrylova and Fula each cultivate a personal vision and style. Fula’s work is surreal\, clean\, and crisp. Krylova delves into a world of organized chaos. What unfolds when their artistic universes converge? For Surface Tension they created a series of collaborative work\, switching pieces in progress\, responding to each other’s progress by weaving and collaging elements together. Surface Tension also features pieces by each artist. Together\, the work in Surface Tension is a study of the inherent tensions of human existence. \nSurface Tension runs May 1 – May 26\, 2024 at Loading Dock Gallery\, 122 Western Avenue\, Lowell\, MA\, noon-5:30pm\, Wednesday-Saturday\, until 4pm Sunday. Reception 3-5pm\, Saturday\, May 4\, 2024\, 3-5pm\, as part of Western Avenue Studios’ monthly Open Studios event. More at www.theloadingdockgallery.com. \nLoading Dock Gallery is part of Loading Dock Arts\, Inc.\, a 501c3.
