The series seeks to support community voices as they share their historical knowledge\, experiences\, and unique perspectives on a diverse range of topics that can broaden or understandings and deeper our appreciation for the city of Lowell. Tours are about 90 minutes\, are free\, and include a moderate amount of walking. No reservations are necessary\, and tours are conducted rain or shine. \nLowell National Historical Park visitors may park at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District parking garage at 350 Dutton St.\, Lowell. Take in views of the mills and learn about the water that powered them while enjoying some fresh air from the seat of your bike. Pack a snack\, bring some water\, and get ready to roll! \nTrips will start and end at the Duck Island Wastewater Treatment Facility (451 First Street Boulevard) at 10:00 A.M.\, 1:30 P.M.\, and 3:00 P.M.. Each trip is approximately 75 minutes. SUMMARY:Women's Action During the American Civil War (Walking Tour)
DESCRIPTION:While no battles of the Civil War were fought in Lowell\, the people of Lowell were involved in a variety of ways\, from fighting to providing support. One group not in the forefront of the conversation that aided in the war effort was the US Sanitary Commission made up of women of the Union. Join a ranger to explore how women were able to have a large impact in the American Civil War through local organizations and groups like the US Sanitary Commission. This 45-minute walking tour will explore a few notable places in downtown Lowell and tell the stories of the impact these women had on the victory of the Union. \nThe walk will cover 0.75 miles of walking and will involve up to an hour of walking and standing. This event is free and open to all. \n(Free parking at 350 Dutton Street in the Hamilton Parking Garage. Pick up a chaser ticket at the Visitor Center front desk to use when exiting the garage).
