SUMMARY:Ken Burns\, The American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Ken Burns will visit Lexington and Concord on April 17 to discuss his new film\, “The American Revolution\,” timed to the start of the War of Independence on April 19\, 1775. \nBurns\, who will be joined by co-directors Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt\, along with historian Rick Atkinson\, author of “The British Are Coming\,” will participate in two events with panel discussions that day: one from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Cary Memorial Hall in Lexington and another from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Concord-Carlisle High School in Concord. \nThe film discussion will be one of the first events to kick off the celebratory Patriots’ Day weekend of April 19. This weekend honors 250 years since the first armed conflicts of the American Revolution\, including the iconic Battles of Lexington and Concord\, with events and ceremonies taking place throughout the weekend. \n“I could not be more excited to join people in Lexington and Concord to talk about how their ancestors contributed to this extraordinary moment in our history\,” said Ken Burns. “We are honored and thrilled to share this early look at clips from the film as we continue our national tour around the country.” \nBurns has produced some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made\, with over 40 films ranging from topics such as Baseball\, to The Civil War\, to the life of Leonardo da Vinci. His films have been honored with dozens of major awards\, including seventeen Emmy Awards\, two Grammy Awards\, and two Oscar nominations. \nAtkinson\, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian\, is the author of seven narrative histories about five American wars. His most recent book\, “The British Are Coming: The War for America\, Lexington to Princeton\, 1775-1777\,” is the first volume in a planned trilogy on the American Revolution. The second volume\, “The Fate of the Day: The War for America\, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston\, 1777-1780\,” will be published on April 29 in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Atkinson also served as an advisor for Burns’s “The American Revolution.” \nThe much-anticipated series\, which has been in production for eight years\, was directed and produced by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt and written by long-time collaborator Geoffrey C. Ward. The filmmakers and PBS scheduled the broadcast for 2025\, the 250th anniversary of the start of the war\, which began in the spring of 1775\, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence. \n“The American Revolution” examines how America’s creation turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. The film will premiere on Sunday\, November 16 and air for six consecutive nights through Friday\, November 21 at 8:00-10:00 p.m. ET (check local listings) on GBH in the Boston metropolitan region and on PBS stations nationally. The full series will be available to stream beginning Sunday\, November 16 at PBS.org and on the PBS App. \nFor the full calendar for all events\, click here.

SUMMARY:Chazz Palminteri – A Bronx Tale Live at Cary Hall
DESCRIPTION:Bronx-born and raised Chazz Palminteri wrote A Bronx Tale in 1988. The powerful one-man stage play depicted his bruising childhood which included witnessing a gangland killing when he was nine years old. Palminteri played 18 characters and brought them all to life in his autobiographical play. His friends\, enemies and family came alive on stage. Hollywood Studios went crazy after seeing it and offered him millions of dollars to turn it into a major movie. There was one catch… They wanted to put a star in the role of Sonny and someone else to write the screenplay. With $200 dollars in the bank…Palminteri said No… he would hold out and wait. He wanted to play Sonny and write the screenplay. Then one night Palminteri walked into his dressing room and sitting there was Robert De Niro who just saw the show. Robert DeNiro gave Palminteri the chance he was waiting for… And as they say in Hollywood the rest is history. \nPalminteri wrote the screenplay for the film A Bronx Tale and then most recently wrote the book for the Broadway Musical. It was the first time in history that the same actor wrote the one-man play\, the movie\, and the Broadway Musical and starred in each one.\nIn the past 35 years\, Chazz has appeared in over 60 films. To name a few – The Usual Suspects\, Analyze This\, Mulholland Falls\, Jade\, Guide to Recognizing Your Saints\, Legend\, and Bullets over Broadway\, which he was nominated for an Academy Award. He has starred in over 20 television series and has won 3 Emmy’s. Chazz is most recently seen in Modern Family\, Godfather of Harlem\, Law & Order and Gravesend.

As with the ‘Daniel’ album before it\, this recording was produced by legendary record producer Nigel Wright\, who co-produced the recordings of many of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals\, including the film versions of Evita and The Phantom of the Opera\, along with many artist albums and TV music shows.\nDaniel has also achieved eight number one hits in the UK music video/DVD charts over the length of his career\, makes regular appearances in the Billboard World Music Chart\, received an honorary MBE from Queen Elizabeth\, appeared on Top of the Pops\, had his life celebrated on This Is Your Life\, been given the Freedom of Donegal\, has been inducted into Ireland’s Music Hall of Fame\, and received multiple Entertainer of the Year/Person of the Year Awards in Ireland and the UK – to mention but a few of the many accolades. \nDaniel also burst into superstardom in the USA & Canada back in 2002 with his first ever PBS special – The Daniel O’Donnell Show. That began a special relationship between Daniel and PBS that has now lasted some 20 years. Since that first airing\, Daniel has had fifteen more specials\, with ‘Daniel O’Donnell & Special Guests’ being his record breaking sixteenth\, which was filmed at the Millennium Forum in Derry and which is currently still airing on many PBS channels throughout the USA. Daniel’s seventeenth special\, is in he planning stages and should be aired sometime in the spring of 2023.\nDaniel has always had very high viewership ratings in pledge drives across the USA for public service television\, and as a result of this and his many other activities in America\, his popularity there has grown substantially over the years.

SUMMARY:Into the Thaw
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Minuteman National Historical Park and Walden Pond were named as among the top 11 endangered historic sites in America\, in part due to climate change. The alterations to our natural environment during the climate crisis have far-reaching consequences to the preservation of history as well as the natural landscape. \nMore than 40 years ago\, the park ranger Jon Waterman took his first journey to Alaska’s Noatak River. Astonished by the abundant wildlife\, the strange landscape\, and its otherworldly light\, he spent collective years of his life exploring Arctic North America on extended sea kayaking\, packrafting\, skiing\, dogsledding\, and backpacking journeys—often alone for weeks at a time. After three decades away from the Noatak\, he returned with his son\, and amid a now-flooded river bereft of the once-plentiful caribou\, he was shocked by the changes. The following year\, 2022\, he took one final journey to film and document the climate crisis across the North in his new book\, Into the Thaw (Patagonia Press) —the subject of his October 17 image-intensive presentation. A frequent National Geographic grantee and NEA Literary Fellow\, Waterman (Lexington High class of 1974) is the author of 17 books. \nThis presentation generously sponsored by Lester E. SUMMARY:THE WALLFLOWERS
DESCRIPTION:A big part of the mid-90’s revival of roots-rock\, The Wallflowers ruled the airwaves with hits including One Headlight\, 6th Avenue Heartache and The Difference.\nRock ‘n’ roll is often hard to define\, or even to find\, in these fractured musical times. But to paraphrase an old saying\, you know it when you hear it. And you always hear it with the Wallflowers. For the past 30 years\, the Jakob Dylan-led act has stood as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. That signature style has been present through the decades\, baked into the grooves of smash hits like 1996’s Bringing Down the Horse as well as more recent and exploratory fare like 2012’s Glad All Over. \nEven so\, in recent years\, Dylan – the Wallflowers’ founding singer\, songwriter and guitarist – has repeatedly stepped outside of his band\, first with a pair of more acoustic and rootsy records\, 2008’s Seeing Things and 2010’s Women + Country\, and then with the 2018 film Echo in the Canyon and the accompanying soundtrack\, which saw him collaborate with a host of artists classic and contemporary\, from Neil Young and Eric Clapton to Beck and Fiona Apple. \nBut while it’s been nine long years since we’ve heard from the group with whom he first made his mark\, the Wallflowers are silent no more. And Dylan always knew they’d return. “The Wallflowers is much of my life’s work\,” he says simply. \nPlus\, he adds with a laugh\, “It’s pretty hard to get a good band name\, so if you have one\, keep it.” \nGood band name aside\, that life’s work continues with Exit Wounds\, the brand-new Wallflowers studio offering. The collection marks the first new Wallflowers material since Glad All Over. And while the wait has been long\, the much-anticipated record finds the band’s signature sound – lean\, potent and eminently entrancing – intact\, even as Dylan surrounds himself with a fresh cast of musicians.

SUMMARY:THE CAPITOL FOOLS
DESCRIPTION:The Capitol Fools hold up a mirror to our crazy political culture\, providing hilarious song parodies and foolish reflections that continue to inspire belly-laughter. Audiences will continue to see cast members from past seasons of the Capitol Steps performing all the beloved bits\, the mind-boggling backward talking spoonerisms\, break-neck costume changes\, over-the-top impressions\, and all-new song parodies reflecting the day’s news. \nThe Capitol Steps started in 1981 by some US Senate staffers in Illinois Senator Charles Percy’s office to provide Christmas party entertainment and to rib the people that employed them. Soon\, they were touring the nation chronicling the humor found in current events through clever song parodies. Struggling like many performing arts organizations during the coronavirus pandemic\, the Capitol Steps shut down in 2021. \nAfter receiving the sad retirement news\, long-time Capitol Steps performer Jack Rowles\, Steps co-writer Mark Eaton and Michael Pauken\, general manager of the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie\, Illinois worked together to set the stage for the Capitol Fools. The premiere performance took place in Skokie\, IL in April 2022. \n“The creative process is pretty much what it has always been\,” said writer Mark Eaton. “You see a headline or news story\, and you search to find the funnier parts. As for the new group—this is not going in with a bunch of strangers—the cast includes some of Capitol Steps top notch performers who just don’t know when to throw in the towel. I do hope political satire still has a place in the comedy world because it’s important.” \nWhen asked if the troubling events of January 6th make it difficult to keep putting the ‘mock’ in Democracy\, Eaton commented\, “I don’t think the mock should ever be removed. Our government officials and folks in power don’t like being made fun of. I suspect they would rather be attacked in the media than be ridiculed and made to look stupid. Regardless of which side you support\, there is plenty of humor to be mined. And when it comes to politics\, if you don’t laugh at some of this nonsense\, it will drive you crazy!” \n“Because we CAN\, SHOULD\, and NEED TO\,” declares Jack Rowles on why political satire should continue. “We CAN is a tribute to living in a great country. SHOULD refers to the medicine of laughter\, especially when dealing with the bat-shit craziness of politics. NEED TO…there is nothing more powerful than sitting in a room full of politically astute patrons from all political persuasions sharing laughter and making fun of folks from both sides of the aisle.”\nNo matter who holds (or doesn’t hold) office\, there is never a shortage of material. Mark Eaton adds\, “We’ve always said our show’s greatest enemy is a competent government. Therefore\, we should be around for a long\, long time.”

A big part of the mid-90’s revival of roots-rock\, The Wallflowers ruled the airwaves with hits including One Headlight\, 6th Avenue Heartache and The Difference. They will be debuting their newest album Exit Wounds July 9th “Exit Wounds is a beacon for us all\, a tribute to the rough year we’ve made it through.” – KCRW. \n  \nTickets to see the Wallflowers on Saturday\, November 6th at 8:00 pm at Cary Memorial Hall in Lexington are $49 – $89 and are on sale Friday July 9th at 10am at www.caryhalllexington.com or by calling 617-531-1257. \n  \nPRESS IMAGES  \nBUY TICKETS \n  \nThe Wallflowers\nAs part of the mid-’90s revival of roots-rock\, the Wallflowers held a special connection to one of the original inspirations: vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Jakob Dylan. Though he is the son of a legend\, Jakob’s similarities to his father are occasional — in fact\, the Wallflowers are more influenced by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers\, though lyrically\, Jakob remains a close companion to the original Dylan. Born in 1970\, Jakob Dylan was raised in Los Angeles by his mother\, Sara Lowndes\, after his parents’ divorce in 1977. He studied at private schools in L.A. and New York\, and by the late 80’s decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. \n  \nHe formed the Wallflowers and signed to Virgin with guitarist Tobi Miller\, keyboard player Rami Jaffee\, bassist Barrie Maguire\, and drummer Peter Yanowitz. Released in August 1992\, the Wallflowers’ self-titled debut album sold poorly\, and Virgin soon dropped the band. Undaunted\, Dylan assembled a new Wallflowers — guitarist Michael Ward\, bassist Greg Richling\, and drummer Mario Calire — keeping only Jaffee. The group signed to Interscope and recorded their second album with producer T-Bone Burnett\, a longtime friend of the Dylan family. \n  \nBringing Down the Horse was released in May 1996\, producing the alternative radio hit “6th Avenue Heartache.” Late in 1996\, the single “One Headlight” was released\, and by the spring of 1997\, it had become a Top Ten hit\, pushing Bringing Down the Horse into the upper reaches of the charts\, as well. \n  \nBringing Down the Horse was a big seller throughout 1997\, thanks to “6th Avenue Heartache\,” “One Headlight\,” and “The Difference\,” the third single pulled from the record. Early in 1998\, “One Headlight” won Grammys for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. \n  \nSettling down from the rush of success\, the Wallflowers rightfully took a long four-year break from recording. The new millennium sparked new creativity\, and the Wallflowers returned in October 2000 to release the excellent Breach. The album went largely ignored\, leading to the more mainstream Red Letter Days the following year. After a two-year hiatus the band returned with Rebel\, Sweetheart in 2005. The album peaked at 40 on the Billboard charts and the group didn’t support the record with an extensive tour. The Wallflowers split from Interscope in 2006 and the following year the group played shows without keyboardist Jaffee\, who had left the band\, signaling a steady decline in activity for the group. Jakob Dylan released his solo debut Seeing Things in 2008 but the Wallflowers stayed active\, releasing a compilation called Collected: 1996-2005 in 2009 and supporting it with a tour. Dylan released another solo album\, Women And Country\, in 2010 and early in 2012 he announced the Wallflowers were returning to active status by recording a new album with a new lineup featuring a returning Jaffee\, bassist Greg Richling\, guitarist Stuart Mathis (who joined in the wake of Jaffee’s departure in 2007)\, and drummer Jack Irons\, who previously played with Pearl Jam and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. This reunited Wallflowers released Glad All Over in the fall of 2012. This past year the band came together to create their newest album\, Exit Wounds. “It’s his best original work by some yards. 4 Stars” – MOJO Magazine \n  \n  \nTicket Information\nTickets to see the Wallflowers on Saturday\, November 6th at 8:00 pm at Cary Memorial Hall in Lexington are $49 – $89 and are on sale Friday\, July 9th at 10am at www.caryhalllexington.com or by calling 617-531-1257. \n  \n  \nCary Memorial Hall\nThe Cary Memorial Building is a historic structure located in Lexington Center at 1605 Massachusetts Avenue.
