SUMMARY:Tyler Grecco- Lowell and the Minutemen
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 1861\, President Abraham Lincoln put out a call for volunteers to suppress the secessionist rebellion brewing in the south. As a result\, thousands of men from local communities like Concord\, Acton\, and Lowell answered the call as “Minute Men.” Grecco will focus on the Minutemen of 1861 and their connection to the Minutemen of 1775\, 86 years earlier. The focus will be on Lowell’s contribution to the war effort in 1861\, tying in the socio-economic make up of Lowell in that period and their reliance on the cotton industry and chattel slavery system in the American south.

While growing up in the city’s Franco-American community\, Jack Kerouac knew people from many groups: Irish\, Italian\, Greek\, Eastern European\, Asian\, among others. Immigrants and their families figure prominently in his novels that take place in Lowell. When he wrote about traveling in America and across international borders\, he showcased a great variety of people and their cultures\, especially the migrants. The speaker will show how Kerouac painted the entire world as a place where migrants are true citizens.

DESCRIPTION:What does the history of work in Lowell sound like\, and how can you tell that story through music? Come be part of the musical composition process in the first of a series of workshops on the soundscape of Lowell through its many eras! Join contemporary composers working on new pieces specifically for Lowell National Historical Park as they explore the labor of the Agriculture and Early Industry eras. Attend a ranger-led talk\, attempt hands-on activities\, and have a chance to discuss the compositions in progress. No musical knowledge necessary! \nParticipants can plan to meet at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center (246 Market Street). A guided tour will walk to the Boott Cotton Mills Museum (115 John Street) and attendees can expect about half a mile of walking. \nLowell National Historical Park visitors may park at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District parking garage at 350 Dutton St.\, Lowell. Now is your chance to get all your questions answered and learn what it takes to captain a National Park Service vessel! \nOur boat captains convey tour rangers and visitors on our canal and river boats for a wide variety of educational programs May through October. \nJoin us on Saturday\, October 5th at 10 a.m. to meet one of our captains and learn more about the duties\, certifications needed\, and the federal hiring process. Applications for the WG-5786 Small Craft Operators will be posted at a later date. \nInterested captains can meet at the Visitor Center (246 Market St.) and will walk with park staff down to the Boat Dock at Swamp locks. \nFree parking is available at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District parking garage at 350A Dutton St.\, Lowell. The boarding house system allowed mill agents sent out into the New England countryside to recruit a new workforce of young women with promises of paid work\, available food\, shelter\, and the care and supervision of a boarding house keeper. \nJoin a ranger for the upcoming Lowell Walks\, a guided walking tour. Tours are about 90 minutes\, are free\, and include a moderate amount of walking. No reservations are necessary\, and tours are conducted rain or shine. \nAll tours will meet the ranger at the park Visitor Center (246 Market Street). DESCRIPTION:Women have found different ways to claim independence over time\, even when it wasn’t readily given. Join a ranger for this 1-hour walking tour of downtown Lowell to learn how the buildings that created the city of Lowell also offered women a chance at independence previously unheard of. Explore some of the ways the women of Lowell were able to gain access to bank accounts\, own and manage property\, and decide how to spend their hard-earned wages. \nThe walk will cover .75 mile of walking and will involve up to an hour of walking and standing. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the documentary film ‘Contradictory Place’: Cotton Mills Alongside Anti-Slavery Efforts in Lowell Massachusetts featuring Prof. Robert Forrant of the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Public Historian Maritza Grooms. The film describes the extraordinary anti-slavery efforts taking place in the mid-19th century in Lowell. Forrant and Grooms visit the sites that still exist in downtown Lowell where abolitionist activity occurred and where freedom seekers operated businesses. \nThe forty-minute film was written by Robert Forrant and Maritza Grooms\, produced by former Lowell Telecommunications Executive Director Wendy Blom\, and edited by former Lowell Telecommunications News Director Caroline Gallagher. \nThe film screening at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center 246 Market Street is free and open to the public. It will take place on Saturday\, February 24 at 2pm\, with a Q&A discussion with the film creators following the screening. \nFree parking is available at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District parking garage at 350 Dutton St.\, Lowell. There will be a sharing of the images included at the end of the session. \nSuggested Audience \nAdults 18 and up \nSupplies/ Equipment Required \nNone; all will be provided by Lowell National Historical Park \nAbout the Artist \nJean Winslow is an artist who is also an art therapist and clinician in private practice with over 40 years working with individuals and groups. She has been offering SoulMapping groups in her studio for the past nine years and has her own SoulMapping and journaling practice that she recommends to all those who attend SoulCollage/SoulMapping workshops. \nAbout Art in the Park \nJoin LNHP and diverse local artists for our Art in the Park series of plein air (outdoors) art workshops. Under the guidance and teaching of local artists\, we will use Lowell as a backdrop for inspiration and expression. Join in to grow your creative skill in different mediums\, from drawing and watercolor to portrait work and acrylic painting. Lowell is a City of Artists – Each artist will bring their own expertise to share with you and help facilitate your own process of creating. \nPlease note the age guidance for each workshop -some workshops are more well-suited to younger artists and family groups than others. The program is free\, but space is limited\, and reservations are required. Please call 978-970-5000 to reserve a spot. \nMost programs will be outdoors\, with either rain locations or rain dates. Some programs may require participants to bring their own supplies\, although LNHP strives to provide supplies when possible. Participants are encouraged to bring their own preferred art supplies if appropriate. \nAbout The Brush Art Gallery & Studios \nThe Brush Art Gallery & Studios (https://www.thebrush.org/) is located in the Lowell National Historical Park across the courtyard from the Visitor Center. This dynamic and captivating place was originally founded by the Lowell Historic Preservation Commission\, U.S. Department of the Interior. The Brush presents museum quality exhibitions\, educational programs\, and has collaborated with many other nonprofit groups. Artists occupy studio spaces to interact with and educate the public on a weekly basis. Currently\, eleven studio artists produce paintings\, illustration\, photography\, jewelry\, sculpture\, ceramics\, quilts\, and handwoven items. Associate artists display work in the common area. The Brush Art Gallery and Studios is a nonprofit\, 501(c)(3) organization. The Brush is supported by the Lowell National Historical Park.
