SUMMARY:Book Chat: Washington and Hamilton The Alliance that Forged America
DESCRIPTION:The paternal relationship between George Washington and Alexander Hamilton captivated the nation in the musical Hamilton\, but the true story of the tumultuous duo goes much further. Washington and Hamilton: The Alliance that Forged America by Stephen K. Knott and Tony Williams shows two opposing forces\, one stoic\, the other ambitious\, represented the complexities of the new America. Together they worked together to achieve an equilibrium that would benefit an equally complex nation\, fighting side by side to fend off detractors and lay the groundwork for modern politics. Join us for a discussion\, leader TBD\, about these equally enigmatic founding fathers! \nReading Into History: Book Chats is a series of informal discussions of historical topics inspired by nonfiction history books\, and led by authors\, historians\, and local history enthusiasts. All are welcome; reading the book is not required\, but will enhance the experience! Dates are subject to change given speaker availability\, and discussion leaders will be clearly identified in the event description when solidified. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers \nRegistration coming soon!

SUMMARY:Book Chat on The Men Who Lost America by Andrew Jackson O'Shaughnessy
DESCRIPTION:Stereotypes about the British military during the American Revolution are countless\, and often contradictory. Did England possess the most professional fighting force in the world\, or did they bumble through New England\, clinging tightly to outdated tactics while shrewd farmers rewrote the rules around them? Historian Andrew O’Shaughnessy untangles this web by following several prominent British leaders\, including George III himself\, to reveal the real competence\, as well as the human folly\, of the Crown and its representatives. Join us for a lively discussion\, lead by British military reenactor and historian Paul O’Shaughnessy\, on The Men Who Lost America. \nReading Into History: Book Chats is a series of informal discussions of historical topics inspired by nonfiction history books\, and led by authors\, historians\, and local history enthusiasts. SUMMARY:Pride Month Lecture: Longfellow Legacies
DESCRIPTION:When most people—especially in Lexington—hear the name Henry Wadsworth Longfellow today\, they probably think of his 1860 poem\, “Paul Revere’s Ride.” But what about the man behind the famous verses? In his personal life\, Longfellow was surrounded by people we would today consider members of the LGBTQ+ community\, including friends\, siblings\, children\, and grandchildren. For this special Pride Month presentation\, public historian Meaghan Michel will explore LGBTQ+ history through three generations of the Longfellow family. Join us and learn how queer people in the 19th and early 20th centuries faced hardships\, found love and acceptance\, and made their mark on history. \nMeaghan Michel is an independent historian with a B.A. in Public History from Suffolk University\, and a decade of experience as a ranger at the National Parks of Boston\, including four years at Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic site. She is currently a guide with HubTown Tours and a volunteer at The History Project. \nThis event brought to you in partnership with LexPride! \n$10 Lexington History Museums members\, $15 nonmembers \nEventBrite registrants are automatically enrolled in the Lexington History Museums weekly newsletter.

SUMMARY:Book Chat on Friends Divided with author Gordon S. Wood
DESCRIPTION:One of the most iconic duos in Revolutionary history\, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson famously worked together through the Continental Congress before feuding for decades. Later\, they miraculously rekindled a fierce friendship before dying on the same day\, 50 years to the day of the Declaration of Independence’s signing. Their relationship allows us a unique look at how the American Revolution affected those of different social classes and ideologies\, and how such disparate ideas were able to exist side by side in the new Republic. \nIn our last Book Chat of this season\, join award-winning Revolutionary War historian Gordon S. Wood in an interactive discussion about these fascinating founding fathers. \nInterested in further Book Chats? We will also be discussing picks for next year – all are welcome to bring ideas on interesting Revolutionary books to read! \nThe last book chat of each series is always FREE\, but registration is required!

SUMMARY:Lafayette Redux: Exploring the Man and the Mania
DESCRIPTION:How does it happen that Americans are still staging rituals of adulation for Lafayette\, cheering him on Broadway\, 190 years after his death? It’s entirely fitting\, as it turns out\, because if anyone is suitable for immortality\, it’s the Marquis. Come explore why the man may well have been even greater than his myth\, with one of the nation’s leading Lafayette aficionados\, Alan Hoffman. He’ll talk us through Lafayette’s triumphs and setbacks\, his astonishing accomplishments\, and the lessons his life holds for each one of us and for our society. \nDoors open at 6:30 for refreshments. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:A New Revolution in Lexington
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, 16.82% of Lexington’s population was Chinese\, which is proportionally the second-highest Chinese population of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. Yet just 40 years ago\, Lexington had only 392 Chinese residents – and in 1890\, two. This presentation\, featuring research by Lexington High School student Sophia Zhang and live Q&A with local Chinese American panelists\, aims to discuss and explain the mulit-phase evolution of the Lexington Chinese American community\, within broader historical contexts. This presentation will also highlight the civic contributions Chinese Americans have made to Lexington and the community’s place in the town’s ongoing demographic transformation. \nSuggested donation $10

SUMMARY:Declaring Independence Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. Across the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? Costumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. Rounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music! \nFREE!

SUMMARY:Gold For Ghosts: Rick Beyer's Amazing Campaign for History's Hidden Heroes
DESCRIPTION:Nearly 20 years ago\, while living in Lexington\, author and filmmaker Rick Beyer learned the incredible story of the WWII deception units known as The Ghost Army. He soon launched a quest to tell the world about their exploits\, and to make sure what they did would never be forgotten. That led to the Ghost Army documentary (2013)\, the book (2015)\, and finally the Congressional Gold Medal (2024)\, the highest honor Congress can bestow. \nNow Rick returns to Lexington to recount his epic Ghost Army journey. It began on a winter’s day in a Lexington coffee shop\, and after inumerable twists and turns\, culminated in a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol presided over by the Speaker of the House. Rick will share insights\, anecdotes\, and behind-the-scenes adventures from this wild 20-year ride that so many people in Lexington took part in. All illustrated with rarely seen photos and footage. A story about what it really takes to see history preserved and remembered. \n“The Ghost Army” is one of those remarkable projects where the underlying story of bringing the history to light winds up nearly as compelling as the historical tale itself. Rick Beyer will share both those stories June 13. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers\, $5 veterans\, active duty military FREE. \nDoors will open at 6:30 for refreshments.

SUMMARY:Book Chat on American Midnight with Adam Hochschild
DESCRIPTION:America in the World War I era was a tinderbox: a time of fierce debate over labor rights\, free speech\, and racial equality. In an era marked by vigilanteism spurred on by the government\, citizen turned against citizen in the war over what it means to be American. Lynchings\, suppression of the press\, and violence against conscientious objectors marred our ideals of democracy. A colorful cast of characters\, from Woodrow Wilson to Emma Goldman and J. Edgar Hoover joined in the fray. \nJoin author Adam Hochschild for a conversation on this little-known era of American history whose legacy is still felt with us today. Meeting is in-person and the author will join us virtually. \nFree!
