SUMMARY:The Umbrella Concert Series in partnership with Salt Lick Incubator presents Salt Lick Sessions
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella’s expanded Concert Series in partnership with Salt Lick Incubator showcases some of your future-favorite musical acts that have emerged through the Salt Lick program. Each concert spotlights the incredible talents of tomorrow’s groundbreaking artists\, creates support and lets you say you knew them back when! Featuring: Olivia Barton\, Carter Benjamin\, and Kieran Rhodes. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nOlivia Barton writes songs that walk the line between unfiltered and refined. With reverence for the craft of songwriting\, Barton writes and sings like she speaks: unapologetic\, yet approachable\, turning crowds into confidants. Having shared stages with Lizzy McAlpine\, Madi Diaz\, Field Medic\, Searows\, Annika Bennett\, and others\, her songs carry what folk music has always carried: emotion\, memory\, simple truth. \nAn indie/alternative artist blending folk\, gospel\, and soul-infused rock\, Carter Benjamin’s music is rooted in storytelling\, exploring themes of identity\, resilience\, and belonging. From his upbringing in Grand Cayman and DC to his bold\, genre-defying album Black Boys on the Radio Part II\, Benjamin reclaims space for voices too often left out of the conversation. \nKieran Rhodes is a piano-driven pop artist and songwriter whose music blends timeless melodies with sharp lyrical storytelling. A Berklee College of Music alum and America’s Got Talent standout\, Rhodes gained viral attention with his original song “Disengage” and further recognition when his song “What Got Into You” was featured in Netflix’s Virgin River. He has opened for artists including JP Saxe\, Ben Abraham\, and Five for Fighting\, and performed at major festivals like Boston Calling.

SUMMARY:The Counter at The Umbrella Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Arts Center proudly presents the Boston-area premiere of The Counter\, a riveting new play by acclaimed playwright Meghan Kennedy. This production will run Sep 26 – Nov 9\, 2025\, transforming the intimate Black Box space into a prism for a surprising\, funny and moving reflection on the everyday connections that can change our lives. \nThe play is helmed by emerging director Alex Lonati in her Umbrella Stage debut\, and features Norton Award-nominated “ranney”* as Paul\, Margaret Clark as Katie\, and Norton and IRNE Award-winner Maureen Keiller* as Peg. \nThis award-winning play follows the unlikely connection between Paul\, a retired firefighter who goes every morning to the same small town diner\, and Katie\, who’s always there to pour the coffee. After many months of small talk across the counter\, the sharing of one secret grows into a deeply meaningful\, life-affirming friendship—shocking both Paul and Katie into embracing the hopes and joys born of basic human connection. \nThrough sharp dialogue and unexpected humor\, The Counter explores “secrets and grief and escape\, [running] away and starting again\, and most crucially standing in front of a suddenly opened door.” (New York Stage Review) \n“I’m excited that Boston audiences will have an opportunity to experience The Counter for the first time\,” says Performing Arts Director Brian Boruta. “It struck me as a thrilling surprise – a reminder that the most unlikely connections found in our everyday lives can have a monumental impact.” \nOriginally commissioned by Roundabout Theater\, it was called “an intensely provocative new American play” (New York Stage Review) by Kennedy\, whose other plays include Napoli\, Brooklyn; Too Much\, Too Much\, Too Many; and Light. Her work has been produced around the U.S.\, U.K.\, Ireland and Sweden\, developed or presented by such prominent institutions as the National Theatre of London\, The Atlantic Theater Company\, Williamstown Theatre Festival\, and Ars Nova. \n*Indicates a member of Actor’s Equity Association.

SUMMARY:Weaving An Address - Curator Tour and Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a free program exploring The Umbrella Arts Center’s outdoors public art ramble\, Weaving an Address\, a site-specific exhibition of work by prominent Black artists commemorating colonial-era Black residents of Concord’s famed Walden Woods. \nOn Saturday\, July 19 at 3PM\, curator and artist Marla McLeod will lead a guided tour of the artwork installed at Brister’s Hill in Walden Woods\, named for Brister Freeman\, an enslaved man who won his freedom by serving in the Revolutionary War and then bought the property and lived there along with other formerly enslaved before Thoreau. \nThe tour will be followed at 4:30PM by refreshments and a panel discussion back at The Umbrella Arts Center (40 Stow Street\, Concord\, MA) with McLeod in dialogue with historian Elise Lemire\, author of Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord\, Massachusetts\, who was recently a subject of the new international documentary\, Concord’s Secret History\, just released on over 500 PBS stations. SUMMARY:The Umbrella Concert Series in partnership with Salt Lick Sessions
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Arts Center is excited to expand The Umbrella Concert Series to include casual and intimate shows spotlighting some of your future-favorite musical acts who are up-and-coming through the Salt Lick Incubator program. Up next: Grace Gardner\, Sofia Lafuente\, and Farayi Malek! \nGrace Gardner\nRaised on the outskirts of a Texas city and now living in New England\, Grace Gardner is pushing the boundaries of the singer-songwriter genre. While their music adopts many of the genre’s characteristics\, Grace has found inspiration in their parents’ taste in ’70s and ’80s rock\, the folk roots of their Southern upbringing\, the heart of the sounds of New Orleans—where they studied neuroscience in college—and the lyric-forward storytelling they always return to. Taking it one step further\, producing all of their own music allows Grace to maintain a personal\, authentic touch in each of their songs. Their lyricism is evocative and emotional\, poignantly capturing the joys and tribulations of relationships\, recovery\, and identity—typically backdropped by thoughtful guitar and intricate production. \nGrace’s inspirations include eclectic powerhouse writers from the 1970s—Carole King\, Stevie Nicks\, Labi Siffre\, and Joan Baez. As they honed their own musical style\, finding the intersection between soft rock\, indie\, and folk\, they’ve drawn further inspiration from artists like Madison Cunningham\, Adrianne Lenker\, Andy Shauf\, and Madi Diaz. Grace plays ten instruments and incorporates orchestral\, brass\, percussive\, and software-based elements into their work. Along with being a singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist\, Grace is also a producer and arranger. \nGrace’s debut EP\, *Peach*\, was released in March 2023\, featuring the lead single “Deny Me.” They have joined artists such as Adam Melchor\, Frances Forever\, and Tiny Habits on their headline tours and will embark on their first headline tour in early 2025. Their sophomore EP\, *Recovery Mile*\, was released in February 2024\, and their third project\, *After Knowing*\, is due at the very end of 2024\, preceded by a co-release with Buffchick entitled “Big Picture.” \nCheck her out on Instagram\, TikTok\, and YouTube @gracegardnermusic. \nSofia Lafuente\nSofia Lafuente is a Spanish-American artist and songwriter whose bicultural\, bilingual upbringing shapes her introspective\, emotionally charged music. Split between Miami and Madrid\, she has quickly made a name for herself in the Latin alternative scene. Her ethereal vocals and evocative storytelling have earned her a dedicated following. \nInspired by artists like Lana Del Rey\, early Shakira\, and Lizzy McAlpine\, Sofia’s music resonates with listeners drawn to vulnerability and emotional depth. Beyond her solo work\, she is a sought-after songwriter\, known for her distinctive voice and introspective lyrics. With a growing industry presence\, she continues to captivate audiences\, solidifying her status as an artist to watch. \nFarayi Malek\nFarayi Malek has traveled the world through music as a Grammy-nominated vocalist with Danilo Perez’ Global Messengers; and now musically\, she’s going back to her own roots. From the American folk music and hymns of her childhood\, to the blues and jazz she studied\, Farayi brings all of the diverse sounds and experiences of her life into resonant songs that allow her effortless vocals to shine. The Salt Lick Incubator award-winner will be releasing her debut EP March 27th\, 2025. When she is not performing and recording\, Farayi shares her vast musical knowledge as a professor at various esteemed institutions including Berklee College of Music\, New England Conservatory. \nCheck her out on Instagram @Farayi.Malek. \nCatch a sneak peek at the artists on WERS Salt Lick Sessions before catching them live at The Umbrella!

SUMMARY:Where We Belong
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella Stage Company presents the New England premiere of Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet’s ground-breaking one-woman show\, Where We Belong. \nWith great humor\, insight and imaginative storytelling\, the autobiographical play weaves together indigenous history\, Shakespeare\, colonialism\, cultural legacy\, the power of language and legend. It recounts Sayet’s 2015 journey to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare\, in the shadow of the Brexit vote. Moving between nations that have failed to reckon with their ongoing roles in colonialism\, she grapples with what it means to remain or leave her own home at Mohegan\, but finds comfort following in the footsteps of her ancestors who traveled to England in the 1700s to help her people. \nPerformed for the first time by an artist other than Sayet herself\, the show has been completely restaged by fellow director and playwright Tara Moses. Its staging in Concord during the semiquincentennial of the “shot heard round the world” raises timely questions of whose stories about history are told\, how\, by whom\, and in what language. \nThe show runs Feb. 28-Mar. 23\, including a special Student Group Matinee Wed. Mar. 12 at 4PM\, and select performances will feature engagement opportunities including optional pre-show catered dinners on Thursdays\, childcare through The Umbrella’s Kid-Care program for parents interested in attending the March 9 matinee\, and others. \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT Card-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. While attending powwows\, cultural events\, workshops\, and Indigenous practices that span millennia\, his passion has become highlighting cultures and history of the Indigenous peoples that are still here and living amongst us.\nBoth the opening reception March 5\, 6PM and Artist Talk\, March 9\, 1-2PM are free and open to the public. \nThe exhibition runs concurrently with The Umbrella Stage Company’s Where We Belong by Mohegan playwright Madeline Sayet in The Umbrella’s Black Box theater. Both are presented as part of The Umbrella’s programs recognizing the American semiquincentennial. \nThe Umbrella is ADA accessible\, a proud partner in the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s EBT Card-to-Culture program\, and provides free parking and free admission to its visual arts galleries. \nSee https://TheUmbrellaArts.org/Foster
