Join Boston-based artist Shelly “Lola” Freund in an informal conversation as she explores her art practice in real time. While showcasing her yarn technique, Lola hopes to engage in an open conversation about art practice, culture, and our identities.
Born and raised in El Salvador in a Jewish household, Lola’s art is a personal pathway, a map to her home and cross-continental community. Utilizing brightly colored renditions of her own fingerprints and objects reminiscent of family keepsakes, Lola’s sweeping canvases pop with copper hues, vibrant pinks, and bright blues that shimmer with the additions of rhinestones, glitter, and yarn. Whorls of string create pathways, as she weaves between English, Spanish, and Hebrew, reflected amongst the painting titles. With this amalgamation, she attempts to build new memories and a new identity in an attempt to rebuild the feeling of home. Existing in the land of in-between, Lola celebrates her multicultural identity while also asking us to consider what may be lost in translation?
