What happens when art, engineering, imagination and a wonderfully unreasonable amount of determination collide?
You get the Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race.
On September 19, downtown Lowell will become the course for one of New England’s most original events: a 10K race featuring human-powered, all-terrain sculptures engineered to travel over cobblestone streets, through mud and directly into the Merrimack River.
These are not ordinary bicycles, boats or works of art. They are all three, built by teams of artists, engineers, students, makers and imaginative problem-solvers willing to find out whether their creations will roll, float, survive the mud and make it to the finish line.
And yes, it is every bit as much fun to watch as it sounds.
The Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race brings together science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics in a celebration of ingenuity, teamwork and joyful experimentation.
The day begins with a close-up look at the machines on Market Street before racers take off in a theatrical Le Mans-style start. From there, the sculptures face some of Lowell’s most infamous challenges, including the cobblestones of Bone-Shaker Alley, the Maddening Mud Pit and the Merrimack Plunge.
Some machines will fly through the course. Others may wobble, stall, sink or require a heroic push from their crews. That is all part of the glory.
The race is free, family-friendly and open to spectators of all ages. Come for the extraordinary machines and stay for the live entertainment, family activities, food and unmistakable sense of community surrounding the course.
Since the first Lowell race in 2016, the Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race has created a place where artists, engineers, performers, students and people with wildly ambitious ideas can build something together.
It encourages young people to see creativity and technical problem-solving as inseparable. It gives adults permission to experiment, play and pursue ideas simply because they are exciting. Most importantly, it demonstrates what can happen when a community makes room for imagination.
